UCSD Parking

Fellow College Confidential friends,

I’m going to be a freshman at Warren at UCSD and though I know it’s technically not allowed, I plan on taking my car. Where are places I can park for free or low cost all day? I don’t mind having to walk up to 2 miles off campus, I just don’t want my car to be towed, and want it to be in a safe area where typically nothing would happen to it. I plan on bringing a car cover for it since it is an expensive car, so safety should be ok.

Thank you!!

Two miles is a lot to walk, there’s usually some kind of parking on La Jolla Shores Drive or in the residential neighborhoods off Gilman. There are also more unscrupulous ways to acquire S or B permits for a high price.

how high of a price is a high price?

You can park in some of the neighborhoods off Villa La Jolla Drive or off La Jolla Scenic Drive (ones that are not 2 hour parking). If you park off Villa La Jolla Drive you can catch the bus either on Villa La Jolla or Gilman.

If you are technically a sophomore, 45 units or more due to AP credit. You can buy a quarterly permit for $183 every quarter. If not, there is street parking, but it is not that easy to find now that all the parking on Gilman is gone due to construction. That means that people are starting to fill up the spot off gilman drive.

This is just my opinion, and I am not sure how much you are planning to use your car. However, I wouldn’t advise parking your car for days on end on the street so far from campus. La Jolla isn’t a bad area or anything, but if someone sees a car that hasn’t moved for a few days someone might steal it, especially if it’s an expensive car.
