UCSD, questions about "The Village" Substance free and parking.

Hello I'm transferring to UCSD in the fall and I've decided to live on campus at "The Village" But I still had a couple questions that hopefully some folks here can answer. I have a car which in it's own ways will be a pain but I'm from San Diego so I'll be using to vising family and friends around town as well as getting to my job in IB. I know the village doesn't off parking for residents but there is a structure not to fat away. Can anyone tell me how long of a walk it is?

The second and more important question is about substance free housing at the village. The idea appeals to me since I hate the smell of Marijuana, don't really care about drinking, and don't really want to deal with parties in the apartment I'm staying in. Are there floors that are all substance free or is it more like designated apartments on different floors?

Also probably the most important can anyone how has lived in them talk about the experience. I mean does it seem to be more people who just don't want a party in their place or more people are strict in general? One of my friends teases that it'll most be recovering addicts and alcoholics or ultra strict religious types.

20 dollar hollars, all day, everyday
Come around my way, you gone want to stay
Weed makes me hungry, happy, and all I can say Sure I need some more
Don’t make we wait, stay awake, fake sleep, got the weed between the sheets
Catch me, Mary J. blessed me Open up the dime, stimulate your mind, slide my
thumb up the blunt Open up and what you’ll find in there I never been in High Times I never been in High Times but can you tell me that I’ve been so high all my life Am I high enough Am I high enough

I’ll be at The Village starting June 10th, so I’ll be able to answer more about the substance issue, but I do know the parking situation. The closest lot is probably about 1/2 a mile down the road, so not too bad.

Substance free housing is an entire floor. This year it was the 8th and 9th floor of the West Tower, though there may be more available with the village east opening up next year. Most people on the floors are normal as far as I can tell, just choose not to drink (though some still do), also others weren’t aware before they got there that it would be substance free. The difference with these floors is that you are not allowed to drink alcohol and if the RA see’s it they’ll make you put it away or go elsewhere to drink whereas normally you’re allowed to. Marijuana isn’t really tolerated in any parts of the village, the RAs will try and find who is smoking if they smell it and get them to stop.

Parking is about a quarter mile away in the Pangea parking structure. Takes about 5 minutes to walk there. It fills up during the day mostly so I wouldn’t recommend trying to leave then come back during the middle of the day during the week, night is usually fine though but you’ll probably have to park on lower floors.

I hope this answers your questions.

Coprophage, thanks for the great info and the map! Sounds like it would be OK but not necessary to pick substance free. Grimes99, I’d guess you are doing the summer housing? Any info you post will be greatly appreciated.

@mbfox125: Yeah, I’m doing summer housing. Kinda nice because I move in June 10th but don’t start summer school until the 27th, so i have time to acclimate myself. I’ll be in Village East for the summer. They haven’t given out room assignments yet. I’ll let you know how it goes.
