UCSD- Sororities

i've been thinking a lot about joining a sorority but i heard that UCSD's is like very un-diverse/ divided... basically each race has their own lil group with a few exceptions but i'm speaking in general. i know its hard to make friends especially in a school like ucsd with hardly any social scene so is anyone in a UCSD sorority? how do you like it? anyone else has some sorority input? is it worth it?
i mean i've review some they seem like fun/worthy. O! and what about the initiation? is it something incredibly humiliating? cause that's not my style.

I am in a sorority and love it! I would recommend it to anyone.

  1. The Panhellenic sororities are actually quite diverse. In most chapters you’ll find many girls of different ethnicities. The Multicultural sororities generally have their own race and that’s about it.
  2. For me, it’s worth it. It makes it really easy to make friends and have a social life.
  3. Panhellenic sororities do not haze new members. Some of the multicultural sororities do haze from what I’ve heard.
Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions…Panhellenic recruitment is I think 2nd week of Fall quarter, and the Multicultural sororities host their own individual rush events.

I am considering joining a sorority however i was wondering when most people at ucsd pledge? Is it too much to handle first semester? I am also a legacy for Kappa Alpha Theta. Do you know much about them?

You should definitely try to go through recruitment freshman year. EVERY girl who went through recruitment as a sophomore that I talked to this year was like, “ahh I wish I had done this last year!” Trust me, it makes UCSD 100x more fun and interesting and you make best friends! There is a definite time commitment but it’s not too much to handle as a freshman, girls do it every year and still get good GPAs. Just time manage properly and you’ll be fine.

Kappa Alpha Theta is a great group on campus along with the other 8 panhellenic sororities. Seriously, there are good things about every sorority. Keep in mind that a) legacies are not guaranteed a bid at their legacy chapter and b) you may find during recruitment that you fit in better with a different group besides your legacy, and this is normal. Go into recruitment with an open mind and you’ll be great! I recommend this website for tips about recruitment: GreekChat.com
P.S. you can also PM me anytime if you have sorority questions

How are the Asian sororities? Like alpha Kappa Delta Phi? Do they haze? Also, usually how much is it per quarter?

Asian sororities are also decently popular but they aren’t as large as the panhellenic sororities. They have a separate rush process, you choose which one(s) to rush and attend events during the week. Yes, they haze. I am not trying to be rude but I have heard horror stories firsthand from people who have had to do it and dropped out, and one girl who actually stuck it out. I know I never would’ve made it through pledge quarter. I’m not sure about prices, sorry…

One last thing to note, asian sororities usually hang out with the multicultural fraternities. Panhellenic advertises that the two greek systems are mixed, but they are very segregated in actuality.

Would you like to share some of those stories please?

Sure, I’ll PM you

just so you can plan ahead, panhellenic fall recruitment begins on thursday september 30th:)
i’m a first year and i’m also in a panhellenic sorority. it’s definitely the best decision i’ve made since coming to ucsd. i was originally unsure about rushing but my roommate encouraged me to and i definitely do not regret it!
overall, i might be a little biased but i DEFINITELY think it’s worth rushing whether you’re interested in panhellenic, multicultural, or a professional sorority/fraternity.
i have only been through my own initiation and heard rumors about other chapters’ initiations but from what i have heard/experienced, they do not involve hazing.

i know you are a theta legacy, however i really like to stress to people that are considering panhellenic rushing to PLEASE not form preferences, dislikes, or ideas about any chapters until you actually have met them.

Hey, can I get the stories too? I’m thinking of rushing an asian sorority, and I’d like to know some of what I’m getting myself into, thanks!

Can I also get the stories?

Sorry guys, I don’t feel right sending them out to this many people. I’m not in an asian sorority and I don’t want to be the one who is speaking badly of them on forums. Lots of people are very happy in them, just know that hazing happens.

Okay, that’s understandable. Thanks anyway! I’ll definitley consider it when choosing a sorority to join.

hi ucsandiego915, i was wondering more about sorority life. I’m deciding between UCLA and UCSD, and i want to join a sorority. Do the sororities and fraternities live in houses?

We dont have official houses or a Greek Row (yet! I’m hoping AS will be working to fix that soon), but many members do live together both on an off campus. Some do have a house that the members live in, but again, its not official.

So with there not being official houses for sororities, how do the sororities work? Would I live in my Marshall housing and then meet with my sorority for events and such outside of it I guess? Also, how does rushing work? Is it right when school begins in the fall? And what’s the differences between the “Panhellenic” sororities and the others I’ve seen mentioned?

Thank you so much!

I don’t think UCSD is that socially dead unless you limit yourself to people in your suite only. I don’t have personal experience on sorority but seemingly my roommate pledged last quarter and she said it was a waste of time. I think it really depends on your personality though. I recommend you join it just to see what it’s like yourself.
