UCSD Supplemental Questionnaire? My Response, how is it so far?

Hello, I recently received an email from from UCSD asking for additional info they provided me with 3 questions that I should answer, this is my response to one of them so far. I would appreciate your feedback on it.

  1. Do you believe your test scores, or grades accurately reflect your ability and preparation? Please Explain.

No, I do not believe that my grades, or test scores necessarily display my ability to thrive academically. I believe that we set our own limits, and that only an individual can determine what their capabilities. There are also factors that come into play, affecting a person’s performance, whether it be their surrounding circumstances or their own self motivation. Although, it can reflect somebody’s preparation to an extent. In my AP Language, and Composition class, I had failed about a couple of my rhetorical analysis essays . It caused my grade to go down, and made me rethink if taking the AP exam in May would be a good idea, since I felt I was not fully ready. I did ultimately end up taking the exam, as well as passing it. I stumbled a few times in the journey, but I told myself that the result was not going to be dependent on if I was able, but on my own desire to pass, and to work for a passing grade.

I am still not done, but what do you guys think?

If you think you got this because of poor grades, UCSD wants to know more about why those scores went down. Did you have a parental divorce/job/significant activity time commitment? Was it temporary, how did you fix/adapt to it, and how will it affect you as a UCSD student?

This response just tells us that your score went down. It doesn’t tell us anything about why or about you.

Since this seems to accurately sum it up, I think it should be fine

First, you need to correct the grammar and punctuation. The second sentence is not a sentence, and you have many extra commas. It seemed to me that the first few sentences were too general, rather than being about your specific case. They already know that your grade was low in that class and that you passed the AP exam. Tell them why, what you learned, and how it affects how you would approach a similar situation in the future.
