Nearing final decision... any last comments to sway me? all comments appreciated. Intended major for all three are biology

If you are from California, McGill will be a totally new experience.

ummmmm is that a good thing? I have visited Montreal before just at a pretty young age so can’t really recall. Yes, I’m in California right now.

If you are looking for year round sunshine and warm temperatures, you will be disappointed in Montreal obviously. If you are looking for a different lifestyle and culture, Montreal will provide that.

This is an old thread on CC:

If this discussion and the videos frighten you, you may want to stay in California.

but just comparing these schools, which one would you recommend

Both are large publicly funded universities. The most common complaint about McGill, aside from the winter, is large freshman classes which I assume would be the case at UC campuses too. McGill is very demanding academically. I would place it somewhere between Berkeley and UCLA in that respect.

If you are looking for a different lifestyle from California, I would recommend McGill. Despite being in Canada, Montreal has much more in common with Boston than with LA or San Diego: winter, old historic neighborhoods, getting around by metro/subway and walking rather than by car etc.

Tom and I only attended McGill so we are not in a position to recommend one over the other, but I know he will absolutely recommend McGill on its own merits alone. Its is a challenging, international university in a contemporary, international city, and in my opinion the coolest place for a student to live in in North America.

He doesn’t want to make the decision for you, because it may not be for everyone. But the majority of students have an absolutely amazing time and the education is unmatched as well.
