UCSD vs. UCD

hello everyone,

I originally wanted biology major at UCSD, but when I received my letter of acceptance, they told me that my i was given UNDECLARED instead because bio was so impacted (as everyone knows...)

At the same time I was accepted to UCD directly with the major of biochem.

If there someone who is more knowledgeable than me, I would truly appreciate it if you could help me and give me some advice. Would it be hard to get into any sort of bio major after i arrive at ucsd? Would it take more years for me to graduate?
I never knew that i would be stuck with such a hard decision :(.

Any feedback is welcomed :)

you are definitely NOT the first with this question. check the archives from the last three weeks.

It’s hard for us to know because this is the first time biology has been an impacted major. Therefore, none of us can really give you firsthand advice.

It will be hard for you to get into a bio major - you’ll need to prove you have really good grades in all the classes regular bio majors take. It won’t take longer to graduate - either you’ll get in or you won’t. If you don’t you can change your major to something similar so the credits still apply.
Academic counselors can help you out with all of this if and when you arrive here.

or you could take biochemistry in the chemistry department at ucsd which is not impacted.

It also requires Math 20A-20D (as opposed to Math 10A-10C) and Physics 2A-2D (as opposed to 1A-1C). More/harder math and physics.

Forget advice. I’ll give you a question.

Are you willing to work harder and longer than your peers? Are you willing to put the work in to get the highest grades you possibly can?

^ Because that’s the only way you’ll get into the biology major next year… Now… I’m being kind of dramatic, UCSD is a chill place. But you’ll still be working hard (for a biology major). Can you do it?
If yes, come here.
If you have a single shred of doubt, just go to UCD.

GL. And at the end of the day, its still a biology degree. Anyone in an engineering major will laugh at the (relatively) small amount of time you put in studying. Just some perspective.

Well okay the problem isn’t about getting grades. With my crazy high school bio teacher who told us the AP test will be a joke (it was a joke. i got 5 while receiving a B in his class), i feel prepared for whatever is coming, but the thing is, im worried about things like priority of classes.

Bio majors get priority over me for classes right? What if i dont complete all the requirements by the end of my sophomore year?

And how am i suppose to switch in? Am i competing for the few slots that the bio majors will drop out against the 400 other students who also wanted bio but got in as undeclared? I hope they will actually open more slots for us…

And lets say things don’t go well. I catch the flu and do poorly for like a quarter. What am i to do by my juinor year?

oh i had two accounts… im not completely sure how this website works yet. I hadn’t responded for a while cause i was visiting the actual campus and everything.

A note – a pretty high proportion of the school got a 5 on AP Bio–you’re competing with people as and, presumably, smarter than you.
