UCSD WAITLISTED me because of my low family income?

I was so surprised that I was waitlisted by UCSD. According to their point system, my points should range from 7900 to 8400. It is understandable that my actual score might be extremely close to the threshold; there might be other factors as well.

My EFC is 0 without a doubt. Since California is cutting its education budget, UCSD should take the students' ability to pay into consideration regardless of their scores. I believe that my admission score should be slightly higher than the cut-off score and I should end up at least on the bottom of the accepted students. However, they didn't offer me an admission.

Do you believe that UCSD might hold on to some qualified students until they can actually figure out the budget? Could this happen to other UC campuses?

i also got waitlisted and i am in the sub 8000 point range as well
my income bracket is 100k+

i think it’s more because of the massive amount of people who applied rather than the income.
anyways, many of the people who got waitlisted/accepted at sd also got into ucla. hopefully they go to ucla and open some spots for us :)

what is EFC? because mine was $1…and my netcost was $9,401

EFC is “Expected (or estimated?) Family Contribution” - Basically, how much your parents (or you) will have to pay

then what is net cost? this is confusing me…

Can they possibly waitlist people for different reasons? And $0 contribution to the school is one of them?

Uh, no. I don’t think it was that way at all. I was admitted with stats below many rejected applicants who had better SATs, GPA, and extracurriculars than me, not to mention that I’m a low income student with a very low EFC. They are need blind.

I have a 3.08 UC gpa, $21k yearly income (dont ask) 34 ACT Score

But i got in.

i don’t know what this point system is…but I applied to Computer Science

My ECs are:

published scientific research papers internationally at IEEE conferences
USA Jr. National Team member for Archery
Founded a nonprofit org for coaching Archery
Participated in school Robotics for 3 years
and a ton of community service in cooperation with the mayor of LA and the city-funded organizations ( i programmed databases, etc etc)

no i doubt that…my EFC is 0 and i got in…i think its just cuz theres too many people applying this year

^I heard UCSD is abandoning the point system and adopting a more “holistic” process. That’s why the game became more complex than ever.

yeah, i agree with all of these ^^^^ i think it was because of the insane number of people who applied this year. because my EFC is 0 and my parents yearly income is like…$20,000… and i got in. im sorry zqbxhdzw :(

If I am not mistaken you get extra points if you come from a low income/disadvantaged background. I think it was 100 points. There is no rhyme or reason to this years acceptance/rejections…I really dont think the UC system was able to manage the amount of applicants

i got in with 24k, first generation…so i dont agree, sat: 1650, gpa: 3.93

quick answer: no. absolutely not. my EFC is also 0. Financial Aid pays for my entire education. This doesn’t all come from ucsd. my ucsd grant is only a few thousand, the rest is paid for through other state and federal grants.

Yeah pretty sure income is separate from admissions…and even if they factor it in, that’s not the reason why you were waitlisted.

I got into structural engineering and my efc is 0.

^may i ask u what ur incomes were?

mine = 22k

Is your EFC 0? My mom’s income is less than yours but my EFC is like 200. Do you have a savings account?

If i remember correctly for UCSD it actually HELPS to have low income…you get points for it.

@adamantoise

my family’s combined income is 22k. (my mom doesn’t work)

i’m a full-time student so i dont have income.

my family’s EFC is $0.
