UCSD Warren College

When I was accepted to UCSD, I was admitted into Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC) and made my entire college decision based on what it would be like to be an ERC student. Yesterday I got an email from UCSD telling me that I've been switched to Warren College and I'm stressing out. I'm not a math or engineering major. I don't know anything about Warren from a student perspective and can't seem to find very much info about it. What are the pros and cons of Warren and how does it compare to ERC? Is there still easy beach access from Warren? Are the dorms nice? How's the social scene? Please help!

Quick answers:
-Warren is actually easier even if you’re not in engineering or math. It has less GEs you need to complete.
-Beach access is easy anywhere at UCSD, but ERC is closer to the beach than Warren. I don’t think a little extra walking/driving will hurt you.
-Dorms, especially triples are bigger at ERC. Warren triples are really small.
-Social scene is pretty much the same everywhere more or less. I would have to say that ERC has more of a social scene though. Engineers at warren need their study time.

I’m in a similar position as you except I’m a second year. When I applied, I was admitted to ERC; however, little did I know, I would end up being housed in Revelle for my first year. I visited the campus, but more specifically, ERC. I loved the residence halls, and I really like the overall environment in ERC. Yet, UCSD placed me in Revelle because of overflow. Now, as a second year, I still can’t live in ERC. It’s freaking absurd! I think you should feel lucky that you aren’t in ERC because even if you were placed in ERC, you probably wouldn’t be living there.

Now, addressing your points:
Cons:
1)In my opinion, ERC (and Muir) are the most social colleges in UCSD. If you are a social person, it sucks that you were switched to warren (although this doesn’t mean that Warren is antisocial).
2) ERC is the closest to the beach. From Warren, the beach is probably and extra 10 min in walking.
3)You aren’t close to Goodys. So, if you are craving burritos at 1am. It’s quite a journey
4) Closer to the library. Geisel’s a hop, skip, and a jump.

Pros:

 1. Fewer GEs than ERC (Don’t worry about the Math/Engineering type GEs. Often, you can find multiple classes to fill the requirement. So, look up the courses/ teachers on grade distribution and pick the classes with the highest % As)
 2. No MMW. I haven’t taken it yet, but I hear it is a ton of work
 3. Closer to Price Center
 4. I think Warren students just seem like more intelligent people and interesting people than ERC students. You get many undeclared ERC students who are basically thrown in ERC because rarely anyone picks it as a first choice since it has the most rigorous GE (along with Revelle)

Hope this helps!

Goody’s is probably an extra 2 minute walk from Geisel so I don’t see how Geisel is a hop, skip, and a jump away and Goody’s is a journey. It also probably takes about 10 minutes to walk to Goody’s from Warren so I wouldn’t call that a journey in the first place.

Thank you for your responses! They’re very helpful. I have some more questions if you have time to answer them:

Is it true that warren is super strict about noise because of all the engineering majors?

Are there doubles in warren? Or is it just singles and triples?

How is the social life at warren and UCSD in general? Are there a lot of parties that are easy to find?

Does warren organize any activities specifically for its students?

How easy is it to take public transportation to and from downtown?

Are warrens GEs really that much easier than ERC’s?

Thank you!

im interested in this post becasuse i got switched from marshall to warren  and im kinda glad because i plan on doing engineering. i also would like to know answers to thekollegekid’s questions XD

not at all, but there are quiet hours

there are doubles

very clique-ish in warren. make friends = easy parties, social life is pretty much what you make of it.

yes

I think you can take the 31 there for free

yes. 2 quarters of writing vs 5 quarters
