My D was admitted to UDEL honors today- so happy!
Congratulations!! D still waiting. Do you mind sharing her general stats?
11 AP classes, 3.9 UW graduating from extremely competitive HS. SATs low side- 1370 but 760 on verbal. Good luck- keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Thanks for sharing. D a little lower but similar. Fingers crossed.
For those with the kids already in the honors program, do students have to take all honors classes, just some, or only as many as they want? Are honors classes significantly more rigorous than non-honors classes? I emailed the honors dept several days ago but have not received an answer. Thanks!
Normally most schools only require one or two honors courses a year. Generally they are not necessarily harder you just have better students so the interaction theoretically helps all students learn the material better. Also most schools honor colleges offer some introductory classes that may have large sections that you can take in a much smaller honor section.
Maybe thereās a more sensitive way to refer to the students accepted to honors college? High achieving, intellectually motivated, academically exceptional even? I donāt feel itās fair to categorize one group as better. There are parents reading this thread whose children will ultimately be denied honors college, and more importantly, the applicants themselves.
Sorry you are correct. Bad choice of words on my part.
For those accepted to honors, does anyone know if housing is guaranteed for 4 years? Iāve read that most kids live off campus after freshman year, does that include honors?
Iām going to say a lot stay on for at least sophomore. The more credits taken the earlier they get to chose housing, I think those who want to stay on campus do. My daughter chose to go off campus this year as a sophomore.
I donāt believe there is housing guaranteed for anyone after freshman year. I saw posts last spring of sophomores in the honors college not getting housing and then scrambling to find off campus housing, roommates, etc. My daughter is currently a freshman in the honors college and we are praying for housing for sophomore year. They seem to be lacking dorm space for all four years.
Housing completed shut down in the spring, zero were on campus. In the fall they only allowed 1200 on campus, in suite dorms only, single rooms, a small fraction of the usual. This spring they are opening up all of the dorms, but singles, theyāll have close to 5000 on campus, about half the usual population. Before the shutdown current freshmen were told that all would get housing sophomore year, but probably not their first choice (which is the only apartments on campus). The are many close off campus option, my daughter is in a beautiful 6 bedroom 5 bathroom townhouse, walking distance to campus. Redding is a great dorm but there are a lot of forced singles in normal times, UD tore down a large aging dorm a couple of years ago, so even though they acquired the courtyards, itās smaller than the old dorm.
Yes my daughter lived in Thomas McKean this fall which is where they put the honors students who were invited to live on campus and she is currently waiting to hear where she will be living for the spring semester. She loved living on campus fall semester which is why she is hoping for on-campus housing for next year. Even though they told current freshman they will get housing next year, things change and if they choose to single up all rooms again, there wontā be space available for everyone.
Thank you so much for your insights.
I canāt say enough good things about UDās honors program! My daughter loves her classes and now wants to do EVERYTHING!!
Thatās so good to hear. We think itās an amazing special program/school. We were one of the lucky ones to visit (honors tour) before everything shutdown last year. It was the only college we physically visited (other than our in state school). We really felt that UDEL tries to hard to make (even potential) students happy.
My D was accepted mid November, got her merit mid December, and the Honors decision in the mail today. Iāve heard great things about DE Honors but without an official visit I donāt think she will be interested. We had a great visit to Pitt in fall of 2019 so even though they didnāt give her as much money she really loved it. Hoping they will have an honors weekend this spring.
Good to know, my daughter got into honors at both, still waiting for Pitt merit, Dd19 goes to UD honors and absolutely LOVES it (sheās a peer mentor for freshmen and loves that too, plus it pays a little). UD has a beautiful campus, a really fun Main Street with restaurants and shops, plus a very active social life. My daughter loves being in honors because she found her tribe, students who love to have fun but take academics very seriously. What did you like about Pitt?
Did Pitt honors decisions come out yet?
Pitt honors is not out until February 1st. My daughter loved the vibe and energy at Pitt and the campus is much prettier than I thought. Honestly, I think she likes that Pitt is ranked higher than DE overall even though I think it would be nice having the special designation (dorm, perks like first shot at internships and classes, etc.) with honors at DE. Honors at Pitt doesnāt really give you much. The dorms are further away and non honors students can still take honors classes. The bar for honors at Pitt is very high (last year you had to have over 1500 SAT) so not even sure she would get into it, although it doesnāt seem to matter as much there. She got $17 K a year at DE and $5 K a year at Pitt.
