I love both schools. Tulane gave me 22k per year and I got 9k per year merit from Delaware, and got accepted to the honors college. I want to major in something that resembles music business.

I'm from New York, but I don't care how close or far I am from home. I play the Saxophone, I love marching band, and I'm really interested in music. I'm also an athlete. I'm not competing in college, but I plan to stay active.

New Orleans is a very different experience from Newark. Assuming you’ve been to visit both schools, where did you feel more at home?

Also, while distance may not matter to you, it will probably be more expensive and logistically more difficult for you to get home from Tulane than from UD for vacations. Just something to consider.

In any case, congrats on having the choice!

My views of the plusses and minus, and things to consider…

NO is a great city. Very little like it. If you love Music, there is an amazing music scene in NO. Will you go and take advantage of it. Del. is supposed to have a good music major. College football is a bigger deal at Del., than Tulane. I assume the marching band follows.
Academically, Tulane is higher ranked. Not sure either ranking or difference is a life changer. I tend to think there are only about 30 schools that are life changers. Just my opinion.
NO has it over Newark in a big way. Culture, food, music, weather.
Newark does have good proximity to big Northeast cities.
Every kids I know who has attended both schools have been very happy.

If money is not a deciding factor, I think Tulane is the pick. This from a dad of a child who will go to Del.

I was down in NOLA for the Sugar Bowl, and much as I like UD, I’d pick Tulane. Nor am I so sure that football is bigger at UD than Tulane or that they are equally highly rated. I think it’s the other way around. But there’s a heck of a lot more music in NOLA.
And food.
And weather
And architecture

As long as you are someone who can filter out distractions to concentrate on the main reason you are going to either: college.

MHC, Not to be argumentative, and just to confirm my statement. USNWR ranks Tulane 50 and Del 75. My point was Tulane was higher ranked, but neither is a life changer. My point was only 30 or so schools really are game changers. The rest are what you make of them. Just my opinion.

On Football at two schools. While Tulane is a Div 1 school, and Delaware is 1A or championship, I am told that games at Del. are a bigger deal. I don’t know if it is because Tulane plays off campus at the Superdome, or the Saints take away fans, but I went to a game a few years ago. it was a ghost town in there. Students don’t seem to care about football in NO. At Del., I am told it is far more festive with the pre game stuff.
But we do both agree that Tulane might be his better choice.

MHC, always appreciate your comments. Thank you…

Sorry, socaldad, I’d misread your earlier post (while having my early morning tea) I thought you said UDel was higher rated. And re sports, even if you’re correct, (I suspect it has to do more with how the team is doing that year) but doesn’t the band. or elements of it also play at basketball games?

Yes band plays at hoop games. Neither school is particularly strong in basketball. Girls Hoops is thru the roof this year at Del. Looks like the star player has another year with us.
Tulane is not a sports haven. I just confirmed that fact with a friend who’s kid goes there. If you want sports and academics, tulane is not Vanderbilt.

Anyway, we sidetracked this thread. Sorry to the rest of you.

Enjoy your day MHC, and good luck LOST with the decision.

I’m actually a student at Tulane considering transferring to Delaware. I changed my major to communications which isn’t a program at Tulane. UDel offers a Visual Comm program I’m looking into. Just throwing some things out there about Tulane that might help you see the other side to it–

Positives:
happy students
medium size, gorgeous campus
unique city of new orleans
diversity of the student body (though mostly white, we’re geographically diverse)
fun socially
Academic flexability

Negatives:
Overenrolled classes effecting greek life, getting into classes, and on-campus housing
Unsafe surrounding area with pressure to live off-campus once you’re a junior
I’m not sure about our music program but the arts at Tulane in general aren’t too popular. Obviously, the city of New Orleans has a lot to offer to you in terms of music but you should definitely research the music program at Tulane more. You don’t come across too many music majors here. I minor in art studio and the programs are very limited.

And we aren’t big on sports, especially football, delaware does have that up on Tulane
