im pretty sure i just saw on uf’s admissions page on facebook that you have to pay by dec 31st 09. by the way, do we get the letter on feb 12th or is that just online notification?

No you’ll get the letter in mid February as well.

[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

Hello… I really want to go to UF. I came from Cuba at the end of 9th grade knowing no english. I was not able to take ap classes in 10th grade so ia had a lot to catch up.
My sat score is 1150 ( really bad) and i have 1760 ( composite)
I have 4.0 unweighted and 5.0 weighted.
im in the top 5 % percent of my class

Do i have any chance to get accepted???

Alright kids lemme tell you something…ive seen people with 4.4 weighted GPA’s get denied and ive seen people with 3.9 weighted GPA’s get accepted…I am a freshman at UF and i had a 4.07 weighted…and my unweighted was only about a 3.2 for my senior year…i got a C in chem honors sophomore year…and a C in calc my senior year, those were the worst grades i recieved my entire career in high school…the only extracurricular activity was that i was on the swim team. UF is very strange in their selection process…people smarter than me got denied. the only reason i think i got in was i wrote a very heart-warming essay and I took 4 AP/dual enrollment courses my senior year so it looked like i challenged myself. I got Bs in all those classes except a C in calc. SOme people in those classes who aced every single test got denied. I honestly dont think i deserved to be accepted but whatever…my ACT was 28 as well…not bad but not great. I’m pretty sure the decisions come out mid february, mine was Feb. 14th i think so you guys have a little over a month to stress. I really wanted to go to UF but given the recent acceptance rates of about 30% i doubted it so i was set on going to USF, until I shockingly recieved a letter of acceptance on that fateful night. So all you can do now is wait. Oh yeah one more thing, DONT SLACK OFF LAST SEMESTER OF SENIOR YEAR…if you get a D or an F just because you figure you’re accepted they can revoke your acceptance

I would love to see UF reject me
Stats:
SAT: 770 M,690 R, 650 W
SAT 2: 800 Math Lv.,690 Physics, 770 Spanish
GPA: 6.3 Weighted, 3.7 UW
Rank: #1 out of 659
Hispanic (Peru)
60 college credits (dual-enrollment, will be getting my A.A this spring) and around 30 credits more with AP.
EC’s:volleyball,math honor society president,etc

P.S: I got into MIT and Georgia Tech.I do agree that UF has a pretty random process of admissions based on my friends who applied from last year.

well the others who didn’t get in were [Hispanic] as well lol (I live in Miami come on), I do deserve to get into MIT though I have a pretty good math/physics resume and etc… As for the 6.3 weighted, my school gives 1 extra point for honors and 2 extra points for AP’s when calculating your weighted gpa and the majority of my dual enrollement classes counted as AP’s hence my high gpa. You should see the kids who have the IB program and were in pre IB in middle school. Their gpa’s are as high as 8 and 9 point something.

after reading some posts, I’m concerned for my chances of admissions.

35 ACT
4.0 UW GPA, 4.63 UF GPA
3/486 (top 1%)
many ec’s

Has anyone heard of rejections for people with similar stats? UF is my first choice…

and oos, btw

OOS admissions are pretty crazy at UF. I’d like to say you’re in because of your great GPA and ACT, but there’s really no telling. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say yes, you’re in. Good luck.

That’s a pretty punk thing to say (you don’t deserve to get in). Congratulations on your acceptances to MIT/Georgia Tech, wthalexis.

Anyway, alexis, it’s pretty hard to predict acceptance to competitive admission universities, especially UF, because a lot of people don’t take the application seriously. A lot of people just fill in the blank boxes with information and click submit without taking the time to make sure that they have painted a picture of themselves (especially for people that consider UF a safety and put more time into an application, to say, MIT? :))

Definitely agree^, but the UF application wasn’t that bad, plus it was just one essay. Also do most top students who apply and get in actually go to UF? (I saw the stats and saw that numerous applicants had high scores) For example, I plan to withdraw my application in order to give room for other applicants.

Being an URM applying in a pool dominated by Asians and Caucasians is a BIG advantage in MIT, don’t kid yourself.

It’s still an honor, but a 2110 is FAR below typical MIT standards.

Take a look at this thread and see how many qualified applicants there are who got rejected with much better scores.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/829483-official-mit-ea-decisions-class-2014-a.html

Regardless, congratulations an MIT acceptance a big deal, and pulling your application for UF is classy since you could be taking a spot from a kid who loves UF.

I really don’t think being an URM gives you that much advantage though. I know numerous friends who applied with better stats (SAT 2300+, 4.0 GPA) that are Hispanic and were deffered or rejected. I think it was that I attended a horrible school (D rated) and had very little resources, and other factors that, as MIT says, shows my achievements in context.

Apart from that, I found UF extremely appealing since if I were to go there I would receive 100% Bright futures plus financial aid which should cover at least tuition. Also, it is one of the best schools in Florida, if not the best.

Ryan, alexis isn’t “FAR” below the typical MIT standards.

Alexis is in the middle 50% of the enrolled population for both reading and math scores. Alexis is the typical MIT student.

College Confidential, primarily, is where the most accomplished people read and post. You won’t find people with lower grades and scores posting because they just aren’t as interested in college as we are or because they just don’t want their information out there because people like Mikey (above) are demeaning. I’d hate to be accepted to a place like MIT only to have people say I don’t deserve it because I don’t have a 4.0 gpa, 2400 SAT, and discovered the cure for cancer.

Regarding college admissions… and it seems that almost everybody doesn’t understand… It’s not just about grades and scores. Grades and scores are nothing more than a qualifier. Colleges want to see that you’re capable of doing their work. Just because I have a 3.5 GPA and someone else has a 3.9 does not mean I, with the 3.5, will not be able to do the work. End of story. After that, it’s about YOU. I’ve read millions of articles, listened to tons of interviews with directors of admissions, been to a bunch of college presentations, and the consensus is this Dartmouth post right here:

[Perspectives from Dartmouth Admissions: You hit ‘submit’…](Perspectives from Dartmouth Admissions: You hit 'submit'...)

Yes, that’s exactly the kind of questions college admission committees ask themselves. It’s not based on statistics. It’s a very personal thing.

Anyway, Alexis, I agree about the UF application. Compared to all of the other applications I’ve seen, UF was the simplest (although that means you have less room to describe yourself). Very considerate of you to pull your application, btw :)

i think we’re going to need to make a new thread when the time comes…call it OFFICIAL or soemthing like that

Thanks roffles, and I wish everyone applying good luck. Feb. 12 is just around the corner!
