My son is a national merit finalist, IB and 4.98 gpa. He has extensive extra curricular & community service. He was not accepted in to the honors college, while some from his class with lower test scores & gpa were. I am assuming it was the essay, although these same essays have won scholarships for him. There is no feedback from the school, only reapply next year…anyone else have a similar issue? With no feedback on what the problem was, he cannot correct it for next year.
It’s the essay, and it’s 100% subjective. I heard this may be the last year they use the essay and that they are moving toward awarding honors during admissions (auto admits)…but I may be wrong here…
To be honest, after his first year at UF, he’s likely going to lose any interest in the honor’s program, as he will have already found his “tribe” and started to get involved in undergraduate research, design teams, clubs, etc.
And that’s the real goal of UF’s honor’s program, to help get students engaged with campus life, and all of the options and opportunities available at UF.
Ha!, found the comment…

Thanks for your reply. That’s very interesting about the auto admit. He really does not care about the Honors College much. It was more that I was curious about how they select & realize now how subjective it is!
