Today I just found out I was eligible for the Platinum Scholarship. The "predicted" amount is 2,000 a semester. Yet because I didn't know I was going to receive a scholarship, I already accepted the $9,600 scholarship FSU gave me. I'm happy to reverse this decision (although I already invested $610 in FSU). But I'd like to know how and when you know if the predicted amount will be the actual amount you receive.

Being “eligible” and hearing about “predicted” awards and actually being awarded a very nice scholarship are two different things. Be careful.

Generally the predicted awards means that you recieve them unless you fall out of eligibility. I’ve had that issue with my national merit scholarship, it’s always predicted and I always have to make sure I’m within the various requirements before I recieve them.

You should call the financial aid office to be sure.

Alright thank you. I tried calling them today and had to leave a voicemail. I’ll call them first thing Monday :)

congrats. did you apply for financial aid?

Would you mind giving your stats? I’m still hoping that I’ll also be able to get a presidential scholarship.

umm as far as financial aid goes…I filled out my FASFA if that’s what you mean.

And sure. Stats:
GPA: 3.8/4.6
SAT: 2080
ACT: n/a
200+ community service hours
3-4 ECs

I heard that the presidential scholarships are given mostly to minorities? I guess that would be considered a “stat” as well.

well congrats. i’m hoping for some kind of scholarship, but not minority so thinks aren’t looking good

For the most part, its only for minorities. The only purely academic scholarship they give are for NMFs (and if you’re a minority…NAF might be an option) and the Lombardi Scholars.

I’m actually surprise they are still giving out the presidential scholarships. I thought they moved all the funding to support the Florida Opportunities Scholarship.

Well congrats on getting it. Platinum is the highest, I think, with gold following.

“I’ve had that issue with my national merit scholarship, it’s always predicted and I always have to make sure I’m within the various requirements before I recieve them.”

Well, when do you find out about it? Right before you enroll?

The way it works is that so long as I’m eligible, I get it. So the only time it would be in doubt is if I knew I was falling out of eligibility, otherwise the predicted National Merit turns into a dispursed National Merit.

I don’t believe they put it on your financial aid unless they intend to give it to you.

Haha yes. I actually got a letter in the mail just yesterday which made it official.

Eek but now that my housing contract agreement expired, I’m going to be stuck with low priority and/or the waiting list for housing. Haha if it’s not one thing it’s another :)

I don’t get it…the only merit scholarship that my UF financial aid gave me was a 750 “academic comp grant” per year. I feel like I should be eligible for some other kind of merit scholarships (gold, platinum, silver, etc.) …should I send a petition, or are they generally only for minorities? I’m a white male, by the way. Any info would be great :)

3.92/6.19 GPA
5th out of 610 in my class
1410 (2170) SAT
Family makes about 50,000 per year
Accepted into the UF honors college

^ That ACG is a federal grant, not really UF giving you anything. You’d get it regardless of where you went.

But no… I hate to say it, but UF is somewhat racist (that’s not the right word, but you know what I mean) when it comes to scholarships. They give practically nothing to non-minorities, but a crapload to blacks and hispanics. UCF is also like that. I know a half black/white girl with a 3.1 unweighted, 3.8 weighted GPA and 1150/1780 SAT score who got some “pegasus bronze” scholarship even though she’s nothing but a slacking partier, and my white friends with near 4.0 unweighted GPAs and 1800+ SAT scores got less than $6000 even though their parents make less than those of the half black/white girl.

I’m black and it probably shouldn’t bother me, but it does. >_<

Yes, good point. I remember I was in my final semester and my national merit stipend wasn’t showing up. Turns out, you must register for 12 credits, even if you need less to graduate.

… so in October my research advisor let me sign up for 2 credits of independent study with him and they disbursed the money within the week.

I’m curious too…

I didn’t get any sort of scholarship/grant at all from UF, and I’m hispanic- 4.0 unweighted, 11 total AP classes, 34 ACT/2210 SAT. Should I call anyone? Do anything?

it cant hurt to call. i did, and they rechecked my file, and determined i was eligible for a scholarship.

congrats tebowforheisman. I’m glad it worked out for you.

thanks! florida has always been one of my top choices, so i was pretty excited
