I received the breakdown of my financial aid award package today and was pretty disappointed. These are the three awards I have listed:

PREDICTED DIRECT UNSUB LOAN
PREDICTED FL ACADEMIC SCHOLAR
PREDICTED PARENT PLUS LOAN

To whom are the UF admissions scholarships awarded? Here are my stats:

Race: Asian
Gender: Female
ECs: 4 varsity letters in crew, captain of academic team, secretary of NHS, debate, science olympiad
Awards: National Merit Finalist, National Chemistry Olympiad, Physics Bowl, AP Scholar with Distinction etc
SAT: 2330
ACT: 34
Rank: 1/158
GPA: 4.0 UW ~4.6 W
Courses: Taken 9 AP classes

Accepted to the honors college and majoring in chemical engineering

I don't mean to sound whiny or entitled, but seriously? I really don't get anything merit based at all?

I received the same awards as you and I was also a little disappointed. I’m also currently ranked 1/347 with a 2110 SAT and 4.5 GPA. However, I’m more surprised you didn’t receive one because your statistics exceed mine. I’m also planning on majoring in chemical engineering. I think I have decided to attend USF instead, since they do have more available merit based aid. I’m interested to see who did receive aid, just out of curiosity.

I feel as if the Presidential Scholarships are just a myth and no one really gets them, they’re just a rumor to entice top Floridian students to apply to UF. Cause honestly how many applicants does UF have with SAT’s over 2330 that they cant award you one?! And I was slightly bitter (not much) that I didn’t receive anything and my stats, like piratequeen13, are exceeded by yours.

It seems like a lot of the presidential scholarships recipients are just minorities from low income families, to be honest. The Florida Opportunity Scholarship specifically targets these groups (with the addition of being a first generation). I know everyone says UF doesn’t give out a lot of merit scholarships, but when the Presidential scholarship is supposed to be based on high school academics and extra curriculars, it just doesn’t make sense for students with your kind of stats to not get any offer.

Everyone that goes to UF does not have a Florida Pre-Paid plan (or a 529 savings plan).

As with Admissions, UF is likely to use a “holistic” method to determine who receives the awards. So determining who gets a reward is like determining who gets admitted…there is a random factor (though UF wouldn’t call it random…but whatever…).

I got a letter in mail last week:
broke down tuition…
how much my parents are expected to contribute
how much I get from bright futures, ect…

@Harley Why would you think in Florida everyone has prepaid…that is something your family had to purchase…
Now, on the other hand, probably almost everyone who got accepted to UF fron Florida does have Bright Futures Scholarship as long as they did the volunteer hours and fill out the paperwork.
