"UF receives 26,000 applications, has room for 6,609"

This is from SSobick's post #19 of 12/23 in the "University of Florida now has 1.2 Billion endowment" thread.

"The $70 million a year has been earmarked for Tuition Differential. This should bring down the student to faculty ratio to about 15 (students) : 1 (faculty).

The money will bring in an extra 200 faculty members from Tuition Differential alone.

In addition, the $1.5 billion (+) Capital Campaign should allow for an even lower student to faculty ratio as well."

J'adoube

great information. where did you read that. i had looked over the foundation web page, but didn't see the detailed plans for the $70 million you discussed. i would be really interested in reading about that. please let me know where i can find out info.

thanks

I just bumped it to the top of the UF thread

Okay well don't quote me on 15 : 1, But I have no doubt that it will drop into the high teens.

ssobick

where can i read about the plans to earmark funds for hiring 200 teachers. i checked the foundation web page but i couldn't find any of those details. that will really help UF a lot.

thanks

According to Wikipedia the details were all stipulated in:

Senate Bill -1710 of the 2006 Florida Session.

i checked wiki UF page, couldn't find it, but i am sure its me.

while i was there i stumbled on this article

University of Florida President Gets $285,000 in Performance Bonuses | TheLedger.com

thiought it was interesting to see how much the president makes. seems strange, considering the financial strain the university speaks about.

Machen is one of the top Presidents. Don't pay the man what he is worth, then he will leave for greener pastures. --Just my opinion

the article also pointed out (not sure if its correct), that not only has the faculty not grown over the past year, but in fact had a net loss of 19 teachers.

not sure the reason for this, but is sounds counter intuitive to trying to lower the student /teacher ratio.

SSobick, hopefully you are right and UF starts soon to pour Foundation interest income earmed into hiring more faculty.

as an outsider looking in, i really don't know much about him and what he has done for UF. SSobick, you would have a much better handle on how good a job he is doing. sounds like he is good at raising money and getting what many felt was a much needed tuition increase.... oh yeah and being president during an unprecedented run in sports accomplishments.

ssobick i never dd see that reference in wikipedia to use of the funds for teachers, but i did see this article that discusses how machen paid a washington DC consulting firm nearly $40,000 out of the foundation to conduct a management assessment.

The two sides of Bernie Machen - News - GainesvilleSun.com

it has a few interesting bits of info.

The next couple of years should be interesting one's for UF. With proper use of all its resources, UF should be able to kick start its pause (over the past year or so) in the US News Rankiongs.

if not, that's ok also. UF is still a really good college with much to offer.

as a parent of an out of stater, Florida is fortunate to have so many really good universities.

I think that the billions we bring in over the next couple years will really go along way in alleviating the bad funding that we get from the Legislature.
