I am a senior in high school who's been in the IB program all four years, have taken pretty much all IB/AP classes, have a 6.1 weighted and a 3.1 unweighted GPA, got a 1980(1320 math/reading) on my SAT, got a 710 on lit satII, got a 730 on French SAT II, am in the top 10% at my school and have over 450+ community hours on my transcripts. I have taken 8 AP's and have passed all except one. I am an AP scholar with distinction. I was also recently accepted to the University of Miami with a 14k presidents merit scholarship.

My father, my uncle, and my grandfather went to UF, my father even went to law school there, donates, and knows faculty.

I was recently rejected altogether from the university and will probably be disowned by my family for this (lol). It was obviously my number one school.

I did some coursework that changed an F on my transcripts to a B and that raised my GPA around October but my cap counselor never sent the updated transcripts to the university. I am in disbelief of the decision and was certain that I was qualified for entrance.

I was wondering if I had some sort of case for appeals because of this as I am devastated by the decision and know of much less qualified people with no legacy who got in, and more qualified people with legacy who got rejected.

Please comment with any advice regarding my potential appeal, or similarly qualified rejections, and how I would go about doing such a thing, if I even should.

Nothing to lose. Go for it. That said, the University of Miami is a fabulous school (from someone who went there). Small classes where you get to know your professors. Honestly, my daughter got in to UF, but I would love to see her at UM (She applied regular decision, so won’t hear until April, and she wants a program UM doesn’t have). I know this is blasphemy here, but US News ranks UM quite a bit higher, and in discussing colleges with people from another state, they think of UF as a party school and don’t know how hard it is to get in, but they know about UM (Strangely, it is the opposite in Miami – people look at you funny when you say UM is competitive, but it is). Sometimes, things happen for a reason.

Can you explain about the 6.0 gpa. My daughter is in Miami-Dade too, but not in IB. You get 3 extra points for everything in IB then? You know that isn’t how UF weights, right? There’s a maximum of one extra point for AP, IB, or DE.

And I SO sympathize about the forgiven grade. My daughter retook Algebra 2 to bring a D to an A, and I waited until I saw the fixed transcript to send it, but the school dragged their feet, and I had to call and email several people to make it not take a month. It was crazy. Sometimes, parental screaming helps.

Good luck to you, but honestly, maybe it happened for a reason.

Appeals are not possible until after March 1st. UF actually averages grades instead of replacing them. Very few appeals are approved so do not give up on any of the other opportunities you have available.

As I noted in a similar thread, appeal of a UF admission decision is started by obtaining forms from the Office of Admission which are usually made available in late February and can be filed as of March 1. The only area UF will consider for appeal is an omission by the student of a crucial issue as to a hardship that the student faced that impacted academic performance such a serious illness or family situation. If that was not covered in the application UF will consider itr provided you have supporting documentation. UF will not re-evaluate the application because someone with lower stats was admitted. They also will not consider a claim that the admissions committee overlooked something contained in the application or other documents that were considered. Approximately 200-250 appeals per year are filed and about 4-5 are granted. It is a long shot. Also remember that the Admission Office posted the following stats on the Class of 2017 admitted students:

Fall Admission Profile:

Mid 50% GPA-4.1-4.5
Average GPA-4.3
Mid 50% SAT-1840-2100
Average SAT-1967
Mid 50% ACT-28-32
Average ACT-30

How it is possible to have a 6.1 weighted with a 3.1 unweighted? That would have to be on something like an 8.0 scale…right? Sorry I don’t understand how IB classes work…
