Just a minor correction, per housing spots: you are guaranteed housing if you sign a contract, but not necessarily on campus. I learned that the hard way as a spring transfer who’s living off campus but is paying housing for the “privilege”.

Which housing halls are hard to get into? I picked Sledd and Fletcher as my top 2, but I’m worried I won’t get either of them since they’re popular with upperclassmen.

I’m interested in Leader Scholar Program at Trusler. How’s the program? Does it actually need application to get into the program? I see the introduction PDF(after clicking the title) of the program say “Simply indicate Leader Scholar Program at Trusler as your choice of Building, and then find an available room” to participate,

i’m interested in majoring in biology and going through the pre med track throughout my college career. I understand that it is a lot of work and a lot of studying, but I also want to have fun while im there (go to games, party, join clubs, etc). Is there time for that?

I think it depends each year. However, those two you mention should not be hard to get into.

@jic0124 I am sorry but I am not familiar with that program.

@JorgeLeprechaun You will definitely have time for extracurricular activities even with a Biology major. You just need to learn to manage your time. And by the way, I hope you understand the fact that you can be pre-med and still do any major as long as you complete the Medical school pre-requisites. Unless that’s the major you really want to do, you can even stand out from the pool of applicants by studying what you like and not what everyone else thinks that will get them into med school. My major has nothing to do with science, yet, I got into 3 schools. ;)

@Ir2010 yes, thank you for the quick response…GO GATORS!

Does the intended major on the application matter? I have heard like that we actually choose our majors when attending preview. Is it true? Since I’ve changed my mind about my intended major. I am thankful for your answering.

UF doesn’t hold you to any majors you’ve selected, unless you’re a transfer student (or a HS student who had 60 credits and got accepted to their college as a junior). UF expects freshmen to change their major a few times as they explore classes at UF.

@lr2010 Thank you!

How hard is it to become involved in the Inter Residence Hall Association? I’d love to do that, but I think it might be difficult to do that as a freshman.

Are the communal bathrooms as bad as everyone makes them out to be? Like, is it awkward having to take showers together? What are the showers like? I’m a guy, so if a man could possibly respond that would be even better because you probably have a better idea of what these bathrooms are like.

And lastly, would you suggest on-campus or off-campus housing for Freshman? I know the University advises you to stay on campus your Freshman year in order to get familiar with the university, but is it really that hard to navigate through? Thanks so much :)

Only awkward if the person is gay

@arrozconleche I am not sure how easy it is to become part of IRHA. I do know they like to fill my inbox with emails full of activities that on campus residents can participate in. It gets kinda annoying sometimes…

@appleislife Although I never really got to use a communal bathroom on a daily basis (only one time when I stayed on Broward for Preview) I can say that there is privacy. It’s not like a shower where everyone can see each other naked. Each shower “cubicle” has a curtain so no you should be able to see you (at least in Broward, although I feel it’s like that everywhere). My personal opinion is that freshmen should be allowed to live off-campus if they want to. They want you to get familiar with the campus but I feel like there is no need to live on campus in order to attain that. We have a big campus but it’s not that hard to navigate through, specially when you can ask anyone for directions… If you have a smartphone and don’t want to carry a map just go to http://campusmap.ufl.edu/

Has any HS/AA applicants (who originally applied as a Freshman & was moved to Transfer) received notice from their college yet? I was told the notices will be done very quickly, but I am still waiting.

@appleislife

You do have “private” showers in the communal bathroom. Some students have put up videos on Youtube, that show the communal bathrooms at UF, so you may want to check them out. I never had an issue with them, and I hated communal showers in high school.

UF has a strong network in place to support LGBTQ (am I missing some letters?) students, you may want to reach out to them with any questions.

http://www.gainesville.com/article/20101010/ARTICLES/101019967?p=1&tc=pg

As a rule, I would suggest on-campus housing for your first year, as it helps in making friends and getting intergrated into the Gator Nation. However, plenty of folks choose off-campus housing (which is also much more afordable).

Wait! I was missing some letters…it’s now LGBTQIA! :-t

Thanks so much for your help. I’m not gay, I just like my privacy(:D) And I’m out of state, so when summer time comes along and I decide to put my stuff in like a U-Haul storage facility or something, is there any service the school has that I could use that would bring all my stuff from my dorm to the storage facility and store it for me? I won’t have my car on me so I won’t be able to bring anything home. Thanks!

@Gator88NE

One last question for you, how hard is the course rigor at UF? I’ve been hearing some really crazy stories about some classes, in particular General Chemistry 1, and I’ve heard that they are mandatory. If you could give me some insight on that it would be awesome. Thanks! :)>-

I think it would be better if a current student answered your question. However, UF isn’t known for being more rigorous than it’s peers.
