Broward

Just wondering what other people's thoughts are on Broward Hall, especially:
1. is it in a good location?
2. how's the parking?
3. how's the partying?
4. what places are close by?
5. what kinda events (aside dorm and frat parties) go on in/near these dorms?
6.what kind of people typically choose these dorms?
7. what would you (or anyone who knows) rate these dorms in order from best to worst?
8. is there a curfew when staying these dorms (if so what time)?
9. how are the RAs?

You will hear a lot of good and bad things about Broward. My daughter lived there last year (as a Freshman) and would not have lived anywhere else. The location is terrific (very close to classes and right next to Broward Dining). The parking does suck (but it is bad all over UF for Freshman). She used to park in the lot across from the physics building which is a few blocks away. The parking lot right behind Broward is "orange" parking and so Freshman with Red 1 permits can only park there after 4:30 pm or on weekends. There is a lot of partying but, you will find that everywhere on campus. I don't know about any "events" near Broward but maybe someone else does. All kinds of people choose Broward. Her floor had partyers, sorority girls, studious types, really....it was not just one type of person. She loved that the other half of the floor (on the other side of the common room/kitchen area) was the guys section so the common area was truley evenly coed. Broward was the most social of all the dorms last year (I cannot say this year). She had a friend who lived in a dorm by Gator corner (cannot remember the name right now) who said that her floor was really quiet and not nearly as much fun as Broward. My daughter's RA was amazing...a real big sister-type. I don't think that there is any curfew. Anyhow, she had a great experience there and "dealt" with the communal bathroom thing. Now she is very happy to be in an off campus apartment but she would not have done anything differently for Freshman year.

Thanks seiclan for all the information. I definitely am going to choose Broward as my number one choice. I am still thinking about what I should put as my second choice just in case I don't get Broward. Right now I am thinking about Jennings or Fletcher. It would be great if someone would answer my above questions only now relating to these two other dorms. Thanks again

Broward is gross. I saw it last year when my sis had to stay in a dorm for preview. I'm living off campus.

I agree totally with Seiclan. Broward was an absolutely great experience for my daughter as a Freshman last year. This year she is in Fletcher in a single room and her RA can't get any of the girls to do anything...she has planned all kinds of parties and no one comes(4th floor Fletcher). I don't recommend Fletcher for you as a Freshman...everyone keeps to themselves and the majority are upperclassmen. My daughter's room in Fletcher looks like a jail cell and she did not get heat in her room til February! (Fletcher built in 1939 I think). My Daughter did tons of stuff in Broward last year...so social compared to Fletcher. Jennings is also a good social dorm...just a bit further from campus. I recommend it as a second choice.

Yes, its in a good location. Broward dining is right next door, so if you are on a meal plan then its convenient. One of the major bus stop is close by. 24 hours architecture lab is 1 min away. Close to marstons lib and many of the freshmen class areas (e.g little, carlton. etc)

2. how's the parking?
There is hardly any parking on east campus for freshmen (red 3) parking. The closest one is across the street by sorority row, which gets filled really fast. West campus is much better for freshmen drivers.

3. how's the partying?
Since may of residents in broward are either in a frat or sorority, going out is pretty common. (esp wed, fri, and sat).

Could you specify.

6.what kind of people typically choose these dorms?
Freshmen. Greek (but I wouldnt say most). Social.

-->remember there are excepts, not everyone is like that

8. is there a curfew when staying these dorms (if so what time)?
Your floor votes on it, it always ends up as open visitation.

9. how are the RAs?
They usually hire the strict, but personable and fun RA's. You cant put a shy RA in Broward. They will need to deal with roommate conflicts, alcohol, intoxicated individuals, drugs, parties, depression, people who mess up the kitchen, leaving hair in the bathroom, and potential assaults. These things usually happen in the freshmen dorms.

Jennings is pretty much the same as Broward but has more girls and a little further from things.

It might not be an apartment but still livable. Many make their future friends on their floors. Plus, if you (not referring to you personally) doesnt want it then there are a bunch of people that would take your place.

The maze that is fletcher and sledd is not for the freshmen that wants to make a bunch of friends. Its for those who want there quiet time for class work and have friends outside of fletcher. Also it probably would of been better if she picked Murphree. Singles are not as awesome as you believe. You feel lonely sometimes and generally they are small.

Thanks ASMAJ for the information. Right now I'm thinking about having Broward as my first choice, Jennings as my second, but still don't know what I should have for my third. Wondering what you would suggest? Thanks

I would suggest one of the renovated dorms nearby....like Mallory. It is right on the other side of Broward dining and was renovated last year!

I agree with seiclan. Pick mallory, yulee, or reid. Yulee or reid has some performing arts theme so not sure if you want that. Actually all three were renovated over the summers 06 and 07.

Rawlings is a nice social dorm for freshmen. It's also in a great location (on Newell near Century Tower aka the heart of campus). I live there this year and it's been nice. :)
