UF undergrad Business school v. OSU

Trying to decide between OSU undergrad Business school and UF. Seems that OSU has more to offer. Son was also admitted to OSU Honors program. Still awaiting buckeye scholarship info and do not know about UF merit aid either. OOS (NY) and was very impressed with OSU visit. Planning to visit UF in March. How is UF Heavener School of Business??

I would say Ohio State ranks significantly higher. UF is pretty good, but not near the tippy top as Ohio state is.

US News has OSU’s undergraduate business program ranked 19th, while UF"s is 27th (all based on survey data), so it’s about the same. UF is particularly strong in finance and accounting. OSU in operations management/Quantitative Analysis and Supply Chain Management/Logistics.

UF isn’t great with merit aid (in-state or OOS). You really can’t go wrong with either school.

Here’s a link to UF spring career fair. It would give you a sense of what companies come to UF to recruit.

The spring career fair is smaller than the large fall event. (I logged in and did a search on last Fall’s attendees, 81 companies were recruiting Business management majors, 108 accounting and finance majors; a total of 328 companies attended the two day event)

Both schools are highly recruited and have solid career resource centers.

FYI

Scheduling a UF College of Business tour:

That makes sense given the local economy. Columbus and Central Ohio is peppered with large distribution centers on top of an older manufacturing economy. Florida’s economy is chock full of retires with money and real estate developers. Banking and accountants jobs are important for those industries.

OSU will likely be much more generous with OOS merit aid. The Buckeye National Scholarhsip is available to OOS students with an ACT of 29.

Numerous kids at our Midwestern area high school go to OSU each year with the above scholarship. UF merit aid is somewhat hit or miss, but mostly miss.

Other differences between the schools is that most OOS kids at OSU come from the Midwest. At UF, most OOS kids seem to come from the Northeast, particularly the NY/NJ area.

At he end of the day, both are large public flagships that your son can be successful at. The USNews rankings are about the same (UF #50, OSU #54), so I would base the decision on fit, cost and if he wants to start his career in Florida or Ohio.

Thank you, everyone, for your helpful feedback!

So, he just got a letter from OSU today offering him the Buckeye and Provost Scholarship which is 15K a year and extremely compelling! I wonder what, if any, merit aid Florida could offer and whether it’s worth asking admissions directly?

Congrats! :-bd

UF a very limited number of OOS scholarships (tuition reduction awards) that it awards each year. The three levels of awards are $8K, $16K or $20K a year. You can contact admissions, but they likely will not tell you until the scholarships get officially released (late February, early March).

Congrats, chillmom! Looks like he’ll have some great options to choose from.
