UF v UMiami : Psychology

Well I'm looking to major in psychology, preferabbly clincal or developmental, but I'm really interested into all areas. I'm wondering whether Miami or Florida would be better, and could someone tell the benefits of both in regards to psychology and campus life in general?

I live in Miami so I've been around UM a lot, having friends that go there and whatnot. Both are amazing schools but my heart is set at UF. I simply believe, in my own mind, that it is a better school based on the general level of eductation at UF.

Here's a link for UF's psychology department:
http://www.psych.ufl.edu/
Go to undergraduate --> choose your page. It's got a lot of info on the classes, majors, etc.

Saving you a lil time, here's a link to the developmental studies:
http://www.psych.ufl.edu/

Good stuff. I'm considering majoring in psychology as well if I decide to go the path of Law (I simply believe it'll better benefit me then a Business major).

Let me know if you have any questions. Unfortunately, I don't have much info on UM, but hopefully I helped clarify what UF can offer

UF for a number of reasons.

Rankings

Better Value for the money

The Strongest Alumni Network in Florida

Unbelievable Social Scene

couldnt have said it better myself

I say University of Miami for the following reasons:

the schools are so close in rank that it makes no difference

If you can afford the lifestyle and price of Southern Florida, I'm sure you will truly love it

The strongest overall national alumni network when compared to other schools in Florida.

A more cosmopolitan social that offers better culture than UF would

More well known school to the general population across the country.

"5. More well known school to the general population across the country."

How can you possibly make such a bold proclamation?

For example UF's peer assesment score was 3.6 and UM's was only 3.2 in the latest US News report. In the International Rankings done by a major Chinese University: UF was ranked 53rd in the world, whereas UM wasn't even ranked in the top-100.

UF is more renown nationally & world wide over UM. We dwarf your research expenditures. Our faculty is superior, and UM's endowment is feeble in comparison to most top universities.

I second that. You'd figure I was a UM fanboy because I live in miami but nope

What a person in China or Africa thinks is probably highly irrelevenat to the discussion at hand.

University of Florida is known throughout the state of Florida, but so is UM.

Miami, because of its football team is more well-known to the average Joe in the United States, when compared to University of Florida.

University of Florida is lacking greatly in the culture and cosmopolitan lifestyle that can go a long way in enriching the educational experience.

University of Florida is not even 10 spots ahead of Miami in the rankings, to justify that it is the better school is foolish since the gap is so small.

University of Miami has one of the best medical schools in the country.

I say go to University of Miami if you can afford it.

On a personal level, UF > UM because well...it won't cost me an arm and a leg

I agree, if it isn't costing you much of anything to go to one school as opposed to the other then go with UF.

"University of Miami has one of the best medical schools in the country"

And yet UF's medical school is also superior to UM's.

Are acceptance rate is lower, rankings are stronger, it's a better value in terms of tuition, and it is affiliated with one of the best hospitals in the country (shands).

University of Miami's Jackson Memorial was ranked as the #1 school in the country for Opthamology (eye-doctors).

The undergraduate schools attended by the medical students includes almost all the Ivy leagues and average undergraduate gpa was in the 3.65-3.75 range.

Pretty darn impressive.

I say University of Miami, for the cultural benefit as well.

OP was looking to major in psychology.

You guys are hopeless. :)

Actually, none of the psychology schools in Florida are that great:

USNews (latest ratings as of 2005, graduate)

UF - 71
FSU - 99
UMiami - 105

If you want to live in South Florida, Miami has a much stronger alumni base there!

Florida is probably a bit harder to get into than Miami from an admission's perspective. However,if you leave Florida, you wouldn't know this. University of Miami is generally better respected and better known than University of Florida. It also hasn't helped Florida to have a HORRIBLE academic reputation on Princeton Review. Here are the Princeton review rankings of Florida:

1 in the country as a Jock School

6 in the country as having teaching assistants teaching too many courses

9 in the country for "lots of beer"

11 in the country for "party school"

15 in the country for "students rarely study"

16 in the country for "lots of hard liquor"

The Princeton Review rankings may not be fair, but this is the perception of Florida around the country. Sorry, but Miami has a MUCH better academic reputation in some ways

Also, Miami has a lot of duel programs and good BS/MD programs. They do make it easier to get into their graduate/professiosnal schools if you were an undergraduate there.

Miami also attracts more geographically diverse kids than Florida, which attracts mostly Floridians. Princeton Review rates Miami as among the top 4 most diverse schools in the country.

The bottom line is that each school has a different culture and different strengths. You really need to check out each school.

Psycho is better at UF, esp the social/community side of psych.

If you like the more cognitive and biological side of psych, major in the neurobioloical science (IDS major) at UF. You will get the best of both worlds. Also you can do research a the McKnight Brain Institute, which has world class research on brain fxn and processess.

McKnight Brain Institute
The Evelyn F. & William L. McKnight Brain Institute of the University of Florida (MBI-UF) is one of the world's largest research institutions devoted to the challenges resulting from brain and nervous system disorders. The MBI-UF's research and educational programs incorporate over 300 faculty from 57 academic departments and 11 colleges.

http://www.mbi.ufl.edu/

University of Miami is generally better respected and better known than University of Florida.

Are you serious? I completely disagree.
