UF vs Miami

I know this comparison has been done countless times, but I have sort of a strange situation. With the scholarships and financial aid I got, it's actually cheaper for me to go to Miami. The only problem is that I really didn't like the campus when I visited and the student population is a little small for me.

I'm heavily leaning toward UF because I like the campus a lot more and its the right size for me. However, I've heard from a lot of my friends that Miami might be better for students on the pre-med track because of the many surrounding hospitals and clinics (Jackson/Bascom Palmer), but I also heard Shands his top notch...

I definitely want to be a practicing physician and am wondering which will be the better choice.

Heavily conflicted here, any insight is appreciated.

I am a practicing internist and a UM grad. That said, you should go with your gut instinct and go to UF. College is so much more than the pre-med classes you are going to take. The worst thing to do is have to say “woulda, coulda, shoulda.” Both UF and UM have outstanding undergraduate programs. If you do not mind larger class sizes (at least for intro courses) then UF will work just fine. As far as the hospitals, that will be more of a factor when choosing medical schools and especially residency training. Shands and the VA hospital in Gainesville both have top notch reputations adn should be able to provide you with plenty of volunteer and/or research opportunities. You should make your decision based on the next four years. Enjoy them, because you will never have that opportunity again. Once med school starts it is all work.

Hm, after heavily weighing the pros and cons of your situation, I’ve decided that the best choice for you would be to ditch college and become a Somali pirate. It’s a “hot job” at the moment - quite literally. (It’s almost 100 degrees in Somalia!) With summer coming up, it can only get hotter.

Lemme tell you, the benefits are great! Free dental care, free vaccines, the works! Join now and they’ll toss in a free grenade launcher.

Anyway, tell them Jamal Niger sent you. They’ll hook you up with the right people. You’ll start as a deckhand - cleaning pirate poop, cooking pirate food, making out with Keira Knightley. But the possibilities are endless. In ten years, you could own your own boat. In twenty, who knows? The world is your oyster… or should I say, Black Pearl? ;D

Good luck, LouieC. May the fair winds of our beautiful Goddess, Ladasha Ebonica, watch over you. Smooth sailing.

Protip: Watch out for sharks. They don’t make good hostages. Rashonda tried to ask for a 20million dollar bribe for one. Ended up losing his face.
