I got into UF and it is my dream school but should I attend for $38,000 a year? I have about $45,000 in savings towards schooling. However, I only got a $500 grant
UF decisions haven’t come out yet.
Are you a transfer student? Or a graduate student? Summer admit?
@Trisherella what do you mean by summer admit? If you’re an incoming freshman and applied for Summer, you still won’t find out until February.
If the OP has $45,000 in savings, UF as an OOS is not reasonable.
Yes, how do you know you’re admitted? Are you a transfer?
What are your in-state options and what do you want to study?
I was accepted last year and deferred my acceptance. However I only received a $500 grant and since I’m out of state it’s about $39,000 a year. I only have $45,000 towards my college education. It is also my dream school
Your total four year cost will be at least $156,000. You have savings of $45,000. You will need to borrow at least $111,000 to finance your UF education. It is unlikely that you will be able/allowed to borrow this amount.
You should start looking for lower cost alternatives as soon as possible.
@STEM2017 The op would need to transfer as a junior (UF doesn’t accept Freshman/sophomore transfers), since they are already a freshman at another Florida college, so they would be looking at 2 years at UF.
They would need to find a way to reduce their current cost (like attend a local CC or college, back home), to allow them afford 2 years at UF.
Discussing it in another thread. The real issue is that the op isn’t happy at their current college, and is thinking of trying to stick it out, or transfer.

It seems that most colleges are about the same cost. I am from PA and even my state college costs $35,000 a year. So what does one do? Not attend college? I am currently at an affordable school but unfortunately am very unhappy
Sorry JP Gator, I thought maybe Summer Session people might have heard earlier. I didn’t consider the OP might be deferred from the prior year.
Do you think it is worth the cost?
If those are your only two choices, then yes, UF is worth the cost.
But you have more choices.
What are my choices though? I feel like I really don’t have many. Yes, I am at an affordable school right now (only about $18,000 a year) but for some reason l am miserable! I worked very hard in high school and maintained a 4.5 accumulative GPA. I would hate to waste all that hard work into just attending my community college. I have nothing against community college but I literally wouldn’t have needed to put that much time and effort into my studies during high school
Like how does anyone afford to go to uf out of state?
You can suck it up at your current school and get your degree. That seems the best choice. I went to a college that was not a good fit. I could have transferred, but it didn’t make sense to leave a top school that was free to take out loans to attend a better fit. My mistake from the get go. So I sucked it up, found interesting things to fill my time, took extra classes and graduated early and went on to a top graduate school. You kids need to learn to not make poor decisions based on “dream schools” and feelings. Life isn’t always perfect. Surely you can make your current school work for a few more years. Study abroad. Volunteer. Take fun classes. Learn an instrument. Seriously.
Maybe it is also my major that makes it unenjoyable. I am a nursing major so we have a strict curriculum that we have to follow. So no room to really explore different classes or study abroad. Also, I still pay a good bit to go to this school and it’s almost as if I’m paying to be miserable. Any advice on good majors/career options? Maybe other schools that offer aid?
Thank you!
