UGA General Discussion Class of 2023

This is all very helpful, thank you. My OOS D has a 1360 SAT and 3.55 GPA (unweighted) with 6 APs. Athlete with lots of leadership roles in school and in community. Deferred EA. Any sense of her chances? Thanks!

@HopingforUGA - did she sign up for any of the Class of 2023 groups on Facebook, Insta, etc.? If she posted there and introduced herself, I don’t think it’s unusual for current students to reach out. If someone found her and started following her out of the blue then that’s something I’ve never heard of unless she’s an athlete being recruited (?)

@71801kids - chancing students seems more challenging than ever given the volume of applications that all of these schools are receiving…I would think the 6 APs work in her favor but it really depends on the strength of the candidates they have left over from EA + the RD pool.

Found these EA group stats from an AJC article in November

And their academic credentials were stellar. Their average GPA was 4.11. They took an average of eight honors, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement classes. Their average best SAT score for reading and math combined was 1395, compared to 1374 last year. (The state average score was 975.) Their average ACT score increased by one point over last year to reach 31. (The state average score was 21.)

Best of luck to your daughter!

@projectmgr She has not been admitted but deferred. She does follow a lot of groups on Insta. So it would make sense then if sopmeone followed her. Was hoping it was a positive sign of potential YES!! Thanks much…

Thanks so much!

@hopingforuga - this is our first time going through the process with our oldest so this is all new to us: especially whole social media element. Our daughter says that the UGA kids on that FB page have been overwhelming nice and welcoming…and that many kids there still haven’t found out if they’re admitted yet but are still looking to meet other potential classmates.

We’re actually going down for a visit and she’s meeting a couple of current Freshmen that she met through Instagram who invited her to see their dorms, meet their friends, etc. Southern hospitality is in full effect with the UGA kids, for sure.

Today Mr. Graves posted a whole article about the holistic review process at UGA. Test scores seem to be less important. I don’t think my daughter has been on the UGA FB page. She was admitted to another school and that is her second choice and she starting to look for a potential roommate. I lived in GA for many years and love the south! Hoping for a YES on 3/15. Enjoy your visit, we loved it when went. We toured one of the sororities, so beautiful!

Is anyone receiving emails for scholarship if you were deferred or RD? Daughter friend is getting a few and wondering if this is typical?

My daughter was accepted RD on 2/8, we have not heard anything regarding merit aid.

We visited the Admissions office last week and the woman we spoke with said that about 40% of scholarship $ have been granted so far, with the rest being awarded through March once RD decisions go out (tentatively 3/15 according to Mr Graves latest blog post comments)

how heavily does UGA weigh test scores in their Holistic Review?

@collegeplease3 UGA weighs grades more than test scores but it is still considered important. UGA is very fair with their holistic review though so if your grades, recs, and ECs are good it may outweigh your test scores if that’s your concern. Good luck! Waiting for 3/15 as well

Is there a “hack” to figure out if you got in to Georgia?

@amxn15 no hack. You will know on Friday.

@FLBeachBaby I didn’t even apply, one of my friends kept asking me

@amxn15 then they will know soon. Unfortunately there is no way to dig around and find out earlier (believe me, a lot of people have tried - including me!). Good luck to your friend. Announcements are 3/15.

How many kids are suppose to be accepted during RD? anyone have statistics from previous years?

@MAhoose Last year UGA admitted over 13,000 during both sessions - EA this fall has already admitted 7556 - so there are still a lot of potential admission offers to go.

Have honors college decisions already come out or will those students be notified on 3/15 as well?

@crimsongirl15 - we attended an info session there last week and they said that they’re saying decisions will be released no later than April 1st, but that they’re working towards releasing the last week of March.

They also indicated that the incoming group this year for Class of 2023 may be slightly smaller because they had more kids accept last year than have in the past.

Good luck!

is the update at 4:00 on the portal or is it an email?
