UGA General Discussion Class of 2023

Found out today: accepted OOS (Texas) for business (AB Economics)!! 34 ACT, 3.93 GPA, Choir President, awesome essays, leading/supporting roles in multiple musicals and plays, and more. No scholarship info. Anyone know if scholarships are rolling? I think I read that somewhere. Just wanna see if I still have a chance  hoping the best for all of you! Also applied for honors and havenā€™t heard anything yet

Our daughter was accepted EA with no initial merit but sheā€™s leaning more and more towards UGA. We visited it in December after she was admitted and she really loved everything about it.

re: merit aid: weā€™re prepared to pay full OOS tuition if needed but would obviously prefer not to unintentionally harm any remaining chance she may have of receiving any merit aid by putting down the official tuition deposit.

Specifically - does confirming enrollment help or harm either her pending application to the schoolā€™s Honor College or potential merit award?

Ie - does the school think ā€œthey havenā€™t committed yet, so maybe offering Honors College and/or merit aid increase the likelihood of this applicant enrolling?ā€ Or does enrolling/committing now show that the student is truly interested and theyā€™re not potentially risking an Honors spot or merit award to some OOS kid who may not really be interested in attending?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Like your daughter, my son is OOS and really likes uga. He was accepted EA and we are really surprised that uga hasnā€™t offered one single penny of merit aid. Heā€™s been offered a full ride to Indiana (Kelley School of Business), full tuition at Auburn, and heā€™s a finalist that interviews in March at the University of Miami for a full tuition scholarship (heā€™s already been awarded another scholarship at UM). Yet nothing at UGA. Really weird.

@davidlt1 UGA is great and all, but a FULL RIDE at Indiana Kelley!?!?!? Thatā€™s absolutely incredible and not easy to come by. Kelley is consistently higher ranked and world renowned business school with an excellent reputation. Congrats, thatā€™s pretty exciting!

@doglover2001 thanks!! Weā€™re definitely proud of him. We head up to IU this weekend for their Direct Admit Day. IU is definitely MY top choice, but itā€™s his decision. He really likes UGA, and I think if it was close financially, heā€™d actually choose UGA despite Kelleyā€™s higher ranking. He really feels comfortable in Athens. 30k a year in tuition alone though just ainā€™t happening! LOL

My D was initially offered a small scholarship and honors. We were surprised and disappointed because she also received more at other similar ranked colleges. We are OOS so it would have been tough. She ultimately received a much bigger and better scholarship, attends as a first year, and really loves it. I would suggest waiting until they give out all of the scholarship money to see where you stand. I wouldnā€™t recommend declining at this point.

@meritaided Do you remember when this additional scholarship information was provided? We are also wondering if our D might get more before accepting or declining.

good info @meritaided !

@davidltl First, congratulations to your son on all his scholarships. My son OOS was accepted to UGA, Honors and small scholarship. He was also accepted as direct admit to KSofB, Hutton Honors and small scholarship. Just curious what full ride scholarship he was offered from IU. Was it from Kelley or university? He will be re-visiting both for admit days and is hoping for a little bit more from either to help with OOS tuition.

My D got the better scholarship offer in February. She originally got the Classic, I think. But our experience was not unique. I think UGA awards additional scholarships through March. Good luck.

@Smyhre congrats to your son as well. My son was awarded the University wide Deanā€™s scholarship, and the Kelley Fry Scholarship which serves as a ā€œwrap aroundā€ scholarship which basically just means it fills in the remaining balance left after all other scholarships are awarded. We are currently at IU now for their DA Day. If youā€™re attending this first DA Day session we would love to meet up!

@davidlt1 @Smyhre Since you are both direct admits to Kelley, another thing consider with regard to UGA is that you have to apply to Terry in your sophomore year. My S is a junior and is currently in Terry and he loves UGAā€¦ Athens, the school spirit and all of the opportunities that are available to him through Terry. That being said, some of his friends did not get accepted to Terry on their first try or if they did get accepted, did not get their desired major.

@atlkaw6, thatā€™s definitely one of the things I liked about Kelley as well. Heā€™s already admitted and he can begin immediately immersing himself in business school activities, functions, etc. On our previous visit we had discussions on short term internship placement opportunities as early as Christmas break of his freshman year. Just really good opportunities imo.

@davidlt1 @atlkaw6 Thanks for info. Being a direct admit and immediate immersion are both positives. My son thought the Kelley admit day was helpful.( @davidlt1 sorry I didnā€™t see response to meet until now) Looking forward to UGA admit day and hearing about opportunities there.

@Smyhre no biggie. Glad your son found it helpful. My son really enjoyed DA day. He met a couple of current Kelley students on Friday and actually hung out with them a little on Saturday evening. Weā€™re looking forward to Miami at the end of March and then we will sit down and discuss the final four so to speak. Good luck to you and your son!

My D was deferred EA, UGA is her top choice, been looking at the kids who got deferred, seem they all have about the same GPA and course rigor, my fear is my D ACT scores are really low compared to the other applicants. Superscore is 27. I just think that will really hurt her chances even though they say they look at GPA and courses. She has a 4.13 UGA GPA and 10 AP 5 Honor and 2 DE. Any feedback would be greatā€¦OOS in DC area

@HopingforUGA - if you havenā€™t seen/read before, http://ugaadmissions.blogspot.com/ is an excellent source for all things related to the UGA admissions process. Content is created/updated daily by the Sr AD of Undergad Admissions - including running Q&A via the comments sections of his blog.

In addition to stressing that RD and secondary review of deferred EA candidates is holistic vs purely GPS/Test score-driven, a recurring comment heā€™s made on the blog is ā€œIn the overall review of a student, test scores are not as important as what a student does day in and day out for four years, not four hours on a saturday morning. For the ACT, we use only the Math and English in our review, and for the most part we use each evenly, but with other factors mattering much more.ā€

Hopefully that bodes well for your daughter as that GPA with that many APs certainly appears to be within the range of students accepted in EA. Best of luck!

Thank you! I love that blog! I think UGA does an outstanding job communicating to perspective students and families. I do hope our daughter is accepted, we visited last year and it felt like home to her. Fingers crossed and thank you!

@davidlt1 Thank you and good luck to yours. @HopingforUGA good luck to your daughter. I agree with projectmgr and checking out UGA Admission Blogā€¦their college admission blog is the best we have seen.

Our daughter noticed that Orientation Leaders are following her on Instagram. Is that pretty standard? None of the other schools she has applied to have followed her on social media. Find it odd.
