Hi! So I was accepted into UGA and UAB. I did not get accepted into the honors program at UGA but I did get accepted into the SciTech Honors Program at UAB. Which school would you say is better for predental or just getting into dental school in general. I know UAB is a very great school, but I believe UGA’s reputation and prestige may be higher. The cost of both schools are the same also.
UAB’s reputation for prehealth students is just as strong as UGA’s.
What are the net costs for each school?
@mom2collegekids At UGA, I have free tuition as I am a GA resident. At UAB I received a 15,000 scholarship, which means I have to pay a good extra 5,000-7,000 I believe… I have applied to other scholarships through their website, and I am hoping I receive more money. I also plan on calling up the school requesting if I could receive more money.
Is the $15,000 scholarship for each year and is it GPA dependent?
@TQfromtheU Yea, I receive 15,000 each year. It’s based off GPA and SAT/ACT score.

Do you have Zell Milller or HOPE?
What are your stats?
Definitely contact UAB scholarships, politely thank them for your current offer, but explain that the cost difference isn’t affordable. However, don’t do that unless you would enroll if they offer you more money.
I’ve seen UAB offer housing scholarships, etc, to OOS students as an extra incentive.
And often the SciTech honors program can mean more merit. Have you contacted the director to politely ask if there are any merit opportunities thru that program…
@mom2collegekids I have Zell Miller. 3.85 UW GPA and 4.5 W GPA and 1410 on SAT. And yea I will try contacting the SciTech director. Thank you for that piece of advice
Let us know how it goes
@confusedboi I’m glad it is for all four years. I was asking if you have to maintain a certain GPA in college in order to keep the scholarship.
^^
Good question…
To keep Zell Miller or to keep the UAB offer, what GPA would you need to maintain at UGA or UAB
@TQfromtheU @mom2collegekids I am not totally sure regarding the UAB scholarship. I don’t imagine it to be anything too high though. And to keep Zell Miller, I have to keep above a 3.3 GPA at UGA
I always ask about the scholarship requirements after seeing another student (back in the day) make a strategic decision. He asked to substitute a 1/2 tuition scholarship to our school rather than the full-tuition scholarship offered since he knew he would received sufficient need-based aid and the 1/2 tuition deal had a 0.5 lower maintained GPA requirement.
3.3 can be tough with organic chemistry
Did you apply for additional scholarships at UAB?

@mommdc yup. i really hope i get more money from them
Prestige doesn’t get you into dental school. Great GRADES (and eventually test scores) get you into dental school. Go where you can maintain GREAT GRADES.
How about the medical program at UAB? Is that good?
