I was recently admitted into the Business Honors Program at Urbana Champaign and the Business Honors Program at UT Austin. I’m really interested in both but I was wondering if anyone who knows about either or both programs has thoughts on which is better/which they would recommend.
Hi I was wondering how did you know you were accepted into the Business Honors Program at UIUC?
@ajstudent172 I saw your thread and thought I’d offer a UIUC College of Business perspective from a parent of two current business students. Neither is in the business honors program, but have many friends who are. I understand it is a good way of plugging into the college quickly. Their general impression is that the merit money and the end of freshman trip abroad are great. The other benefit is getting to know a group of fellow business students right away.
However, when I have asked them if either of them are disappointed that they weren’t in the program, they have no regrets. There are lots of opportunities to “plug in” to the business school…if you seek them. My eldest got her full-time job offer with one of the Big 3 Consulting firms in October. My son is thriving and enjoying his experience.
There are many reasons UIUC has been a good fit for them (in no particular order):
– Business Career Services https://business.illinois.edu/bcs/
– undergraduate employment stats https://business.illinois.edu/bcs/recruiters/statistics/ug-stats/
– study abroad(!) https://studyabroad.business.illinois.edu/programs/semester/
[my daughter did one semester in Europe as a sophomore; my son will be abroad next semester as a sophomore…I don’t know the stats but a lot of students do a study abroad]
– in our opinion, the size of CoB is not too big or too small
– UIUC gives credit for a lot of AP classes https://admissions.illinois.edu/Apply/Freshman/college-credit-AP
– lots of opportunities to connect with the school through RSOs(!) (registered student organizations)
– my son is strong in math and science and has been able to do some crossover work with engineering students
– and lastly, they feel like there are a lot of very intelligent, talented people who they have become friends with in a competitive, yet truly collaborative environment.
I don’t know you or what you are seeking in your college experience. I am also unfamiliar with UT Austin’s program, so can’t offer comparisons, but I hope this helps.
Austin is a beautiful city…I lived in Houston for 7 yrs and loved visiting it. Urbana-Champaign is about a 2 hr drive south of Chicago surrounded by flat farmland. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lXbFu91a0t4
But as my children have learned, the 4 year college experience is what you make of it. They work very hard, while on campus, without a lot of distractions. If I were you, I would reflect on what you want and where you think you can do well. You know yourself the best. Good luck!
@asdlajs123 It was under scholarship information on the portal and i believe they just sent out an email to all accepted!
@88jm19 Wow! Thank you so much this was really helpful. I’ll be visiting both campuses in march so hopefully I’ll be able to get a better feel for what I am interested in then
You’re welcome. You may also find this helpful for a campus visit…though it seems the reservation link is inactive now. You may want to email the contact or wait until school is back in session for the Spring semester. https://business.illinois.edu/shadowprogram/
Congratulations on your Honors program at both UIUC and UT. Did you apply early for the BHP at UT? Mine still shows they’re reviewing the application for BHP.
@gokdon Thanks! and yes I did.
