I got into chemistry major but im willing to change major to chemical engineering if i go to UIUC. I realized that chemical engineering in UIUC is not part of school of engineering but rather part of college of liberal arts and science. The UIUC website says that chemical engineering is a specialized curriculum in chemistry major.

Is chemical engineering in UIUC good as other engineering majors?
Do chemical engineering students get the same advantages like other engineering students?
(ex. better facilities and better buildings)
Is it easy to change major from chemistry to chemical engineering?

Hi! I’m currently a chemical engineering student at UIUC and I did just what you’re thinking about doing…I came in as a chemistry student and then switched to chemical engineering my sophomore year. It was EXTREMELY easy since they are in the same school. All I needed to do was fill out a form and get it signed by the dean.

And YES chemical engineering is just as good as other engineering majors. UIUC’s program was ranked 9th in the US last year, so don’t worry about not getting a great education.

Since we are in LAS and not the engineering school, we will not receive an engineering degree, but we do get all the perks engineering students get. This includes free printing at the engineering library as well as using the engineering school’s career services. We are invited to participate in the engineering school’s career fairs as well. In the chemistry building, we even get our own computer lab with even more free printing that only chemical engineerings students get to use.

Overall, switching to chemical engineering is a great choice. Or you can do what I did and spend the first year taking the intro classes just to get a feel for how classes will go in college and then switch after a year. And the great thing is, you will have classes with the same people, so finding study partners is really easy!

Hey I’m a senior in high school or going to be this year and will be applying to UIUC. However is it hard to get into LAS as a Chem major? Because like yourself and synenergy I’m planning on doing the same thing. What was your GPA and SAT/ACT if you could tell me that would be great so I would know where to ball park my stats. I’m really nervous because I don’t think I’ll get in but then again I’ve heard people with worse stats who gotten in. However I feel that Chemistry at UIUC is relatively competitive as well.

When I was visiting campus a couple weeks ago, they said if you applied to a competitive program and did not get accepted, they may ask you to switch to another one. In addition, you may also apply to general study with undecided major in freshmen year. In either case, you may switch to ChemE (ChBE) later on if there is quota available. I believe the ChBE program is as competitive as other Engineering that the mid 50 ACT would be around 31-34 and SAT CR+M 1360-1480.
