UIUC class 2020 thread

Over 4,000 with most of those going to the CS in College of Engineering major, 20%+ more than last year. This is from the department.

Are you in-state? They are showing preference for in state applicants, although I doubt it is much more than a tie breaker. .

Unfortunately not in state–from TN. I want to give him a realistic idea of the sheer number of kids applying, many of whom are probably as qualified as he is. He did CS50, programs games on roblox.com that have hit 5.5 million players this week (it was only 2 million at time of app) and spends 12 hours a day working on his coding when not in school, so I think he’ll be fine anywhere, like Purdue where he’s already in, but his heart is set on (scripted for?) UIUC. I kind of dread 2/5…

Well if it’s any relief, the CS dept (undergrad) has a much higher percentage of OOS students than the school overall at 28%+. I think it might be the only dept that is <50% IL residents.

It is very selective, but it’s not CMU CS or Berkeley EECS either. I think he is definitely in the ballpark. Good luck!

Four weeks to go!! We have some other schools coming up in the next few weeks which gives me something else to think about but we are just counting down the days…S is not concerned at all because he thinks it’s his destiny to get in. I am VERY nervous…

Good luck to yohr S @s16s18s21s25

He’s got very strong stats!

Did he consider Vandy or did you hear CS isn’t one of the school’s strong point?

Didn’t really consider Vandy…S got hung up on rankings and of all the lists I could find, Vandy wasn’t as high up. Plus, it’s exceedingly expensive and very close to home (we are in the south). S wants colder weather and loved UIUC when he was there last summer. To him it’s absolutely perfect.

D16 participated in the Girls’ Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science (GAMES) camp in summer 2014 at UIUC and loved the campus.

I told her the advantage of UIUC is she won’t have a hard time getting tickets to the football games.

We will probably send D19 to the same camp in a couple of years since I’m sure she’ll apply there too.

Thing is…it’s in the middle of cornfield.

My daughter did as well, in bioengineering. It makes a nice thing to add to the essay for sure.

S16 really liked the WYSE program. He had already thought UIUC was his first choice before then but that really cemented it, despite the constant wind that messed up his hair. (he said if he goes there he will cut it much shorter!).

Ultra-essays…

how good I am?

“How good I am?”… At what???

I’m going out in a limb and guessing you’re OOS?

Intended major?

I am an international(INDIAN) applicant.
Major-mechanical engineering

Good means likely to be admitted.
Thanks bro

SAT is on the low side. Your schools system’s version of GPA doesn’t seem to be high enough to compensate comfortably for it.

COE one of the best in the country and toughest of the schools to get into for UIUC.

I would say average to below average chance at best.

Lots of good luck to you though!

thank you brother.
But then the acceptance rate of uiuc engineering is >70%…
And scores are so high
What’s the reason??

Also, please chance me for ut austin, purdue, penn state and virginia tech

Again thanks a lot for helping this tenderfoot boy…

You’re right. Depending on the source, the acceptance rate is 60-70%.

The only thing I can think of is the students are self-selecting. That is, only those with high stats apply because they think they have no chance without those high stats. That’s how a school can get high average stats and have a >50% acceptance rate. Also, most of those students are from IL too so I took the fact that you’re an international student into consideration.

Also need to check though to ensure those acceptance rates are for the entire university or just the colleges of engineering.

I would say that you have a better chance at PSU, VT, and Purdue (in that order). Don’t know much about UT.

I think you’re right in the thick of the conversation for PSU and VT.

Your SAT scores aren’t helping though.

Real thanxx bro…
One last question-
Did I leave any good engineering unis. that are match or slightly reach??

(Sorry for so many questions but I haven’t got anybody to answer any!!)

You need to start your search by looking at some ranking websites, just to give you an idea for the “top” schools…but FYI my S just got rejected from Georgia Tech this morning with a 35C, and got into Ohio State but didn’t get into the College of Engineering. Your test scores need to come up if you are looking at top 15 type schools. You can look at the class of 2020 or class of 2019 threads for each school to see what stats have been accepted, etc.

What do you guys think my chances are?

3.73 Unweighted GPA (most rigorous curriculum given what my school offered)
33 ACT (34 E, 30 M, 33 R, 33 S)- single sitting
34 ACT (35 E, 34 M, 33 R, 33 S)- superscored
APUSH (5), AP Chem (3)
6 APs, 4 Honors, 2 CC courses by the time I finish high school
Solid Extracurriculars and Essays

OOS (California)
Asian Indian Male
Major: Computer Engineering

@Indijat I would be surprised f you were accepted. I was told mechanical engineering is one of the more competitive majors, and your scores and gpa are low. Sorry

@s16s18s21s25 Sorry to hear about GT decision. My S got deferred (I think the “home game” advantage-being in-state gets him deferred instead of denied). Now, being OOS applying to UIUC, I am scared to put much hope in it.
Your S has great stats though. Good luck!
