I'm an international student, going to UIUC in the Fall as a freshmen. I'm confused about the dorms. There are dorms in Ikenberry which are just co-ed (Nugent and Bousefield) but I heard those aren't for freshmen. I'm mainly concerned with the bathrooms, are there any co-ed baths? I want a dorm that's close to the main quad and social, although I'm not into partying so I was thinking of Ikenberry or LAR. I'm majoring in Psych so I'm not too keen on ISR and FAR and PAR are too far. And what's Allen Hall? I don't really understand what an LLC is. I was interested in LEADS at Hopkins but I read that they have smaller classes in the halls itself, so does that mean they won't be able to take normal classes? I've never visited UIUC so all the info I get is from people who go there or the internet :P

Thanks!

I think that Ikenberry is the dorm group known as the “six pack” where many students who want to rush fraternities and sororities stay. I think there is a strong party scene there. I heard Allen appeals to artsy types but I’m sure there’s a mix of people. LLC is a Living Learning Community where they place kids who share the same interest together. I think you can take normal classes, but have the option to join the LLC classes (don’t believe it’s mandatory, but double check).

Also Lincoln Avenue Residences- closer than PAR and FAR.
More on LEADS:

You have to write a mini essay for joining an LLC, and it costs $250 extra.

Don’t forget to get your contract submitted before May 15.

Found this guide on reddit- added a piece of info or two. From the looks of this Ikenberry is not the sixpack. What is the sixpack???

-Guide to the dorms
Allen is artsy, quirky, semi-loud but decently friendly. Trees. Decently close to quad
-Busey-Evans is quiet, and all girls. Close to Quad. air conditioning
-LAR is Busey Evans, but with boys recently added. No A/C.
Ikenberry-Has its own rec center, lots of amenities, competitive (sophs and jrs). brand new
Six pack–Loud, fun, ke$ha video essentially. as far from the quad as par/far
ISR-Quiet, nerdy, but you can make it fun AND study. Lots o’ Asians. Air conditioning
PAR/FAR: Large international and black community, far away, good food and nice furniture. Far has air conditioning
Private housing-quiet, expensive, food isn’t as great as they make it out. Isolating, and not very diverse. Plus, you can only get into your dorm’s kitchen. With public dorms, you can eat in any of the 7 dorms–nice when you have friends in a different dorm, you want greasy food (PAR!) or you live far away and want to eat between classes (Busey-Evans)
-You’ll be fine without air conditioning, chill out and get a fan.

hmm it does look like parts of Ikenberry= the sixpack- quoting from a previous thread

“The six pack refers to six east side dorms, Synder, Scott, Weston, Hopkins, Garner and Forbes. Only five of those are left since Garner has been demolished to make way for a new dorm. Also, there is one other new dorm in the area, Nugent, which opened a few years ago at which time they also renamed the general area as Ikenberry Commons, North and South, which includes all the east side dorms not just the six pack. The plan is to replace several of the dorms with new ones. The most highly desired dorm now is Nugent since it is the first new dorm built on campus in over 40 years and is a much nicer facility than the old halls. However, freshman have little chance of getting into it since upperclassmen get priority and choose it. The five remaining members of the six pack are similar buildings and staying in one is not much different than staying in the others except that Snyder is a declared substance free dorm.”
