UIUC Dorms

I recently was (thankfully) accepted as a sophomore transfer for Fall 2013 for astronomy (may change to physics at some point). If my friend is accepted, we were going to try to room together. Now I need to research the dorms.

I think what I'm looking for in a dorm is definitely coed (preferably coed split), social-but at the same time not overly social so I'll be able to sleep/study haha-, and within a reasonable distance from the ARC or CRCE. Distance from my classes isn't a big issue.

I've started researching two dorms so far: Allen Hall and ISR (specifically Townsend Hall). A friend recommended Allen and, from what I can see, seems pretty cool. The only, if any, negative thing I've heard about it is that some residents tend to be "weird" (I am not trying to offend anyone in Allen Hall, this is simply something I've heard or read online). All I've heard about ISR residents is that many tend to be engineering students.

I've seen basic things about them, room sizes, and locations around these dorms online. What I would really like to know is how these dorms are socially. If anyone would be able to give perspectives on these, or perhaps other interesting dorms, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I’d go for the 6 pack. Super close to the ARC and its supposed to be very social. I haven’t heard anyone complain of not being able to sleep cause of noise there.

Allen Hall and PAR are both moderately social and close to CRCE. The 6-pack is VERY social (might be loud at times.)and close to the ARC.
ISR is too quiet and might not be what you’re looking for. Whether you jive with people at Allen Hall is up to your personality. If you’re an artsy/slightly nerdy person, you’ll fit right in.

Funny, I attended UIUC 28 years ago, and lived in the 6 pack and ISR, and knew people from Allen Hall. Sounds like the reputations have not changed a bit!

FWIW, I enjoyed both dorms…ISR tends to have more engineers, the six pack is close to the football stadium and Assembly Hall. The six pack has more freshman…ISR more upperclassmen.
