My son received his admit envelope today. I don’t know when they stopped doing the bright orange mailing, but this time it’s white. I also forgot they too like some other schools throw in some stickers. We’re in state.
Congratulations! Somehow my son got the mail last weekend. The stickers are nice.
I can see that we will be struggling with the choice between UIUC and UF. My wife really wants to send my son to the strong engineering college at UIUC, but my priority is more on a free college experience Is a bioengineering degree at UIUC worth a quarter million dollars???
In your case, probably not. That free UF degree plus the warm weather is hard to pass up. But, you never know what else may come your way. I have a friend who’s daughter passed up the in state free Honors Program for something else and is loving it and thriving but it really depends on your kid and one thing with this kid is she didn’t want to go with 100 kids from her home school. Which is why my own daughters didn’t want to attend UIUC before they even applied.
Thank you for the nice words. Indeed, it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in the coming months. Hopefully everything works out fine. Wish the best luck for your son!
My DD received the mail few days back. But the envelope is orange in color. Does it indicates anything or just a color preference from UIUC?
My son received one today - one side of envelope is white in color and the other side is largely orange with some blue at the bottom. Of course, they threw in some stickers!
Just checked the mailbox, based on the comments here about people receiving envelopes and my son got three things–the orange/blue/white envelope, a brochure and a gift from School of Fine Arts, a selfie ring light. Never knew there’s such an accessory for cell phones! He is admitted into UIUC’s Computer Science + Music major.
I was reading online that there is a dorm with an all vegetarian dining hall. Would anyone know which one it is. Thanks in advance
I was invited to apply a few days ago.
There is a whole section of vegetarian at every dining hall.
Few things about dining:
If you live in private certified housing facility (e.g. Bromley), you are tied to that residence hall dining hall. So private housing is little better than residence hall, but if you don’t like food, you are stuck to spend more outside.
If you live at univ housing residence hall, you can dine at any univ housing dining hall. This provides most convenience and flexibility to your schedule and food preference.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the private certified housing?
When you mean residence hall, you mean the University housing correct? And private certified is the PCHs?
So of you live in the residence halls, you can dine at any of the dining halls, but if you live in a PCH, you are restricted to eat only there. Is that right?
Precisely…
did everyone get something in the mail? We have not yet.
PCH
More control - you choose rather than being beholden to what selection slot UIUC gives you
Usually nicer rooms for Freshman
May not be as social
Limited food plan - cant eat anywhere on campus under plan
Large contingent of international students
Better locations than many of the UIUC dorms
UIUC
Usually cheaper
Rolling the dice - not great if you are allocated one of the last slots for selecting rooms
Most of the dorms are more social if you want to meet people
Meal plans allow you to eat anywhere on campus at UIUC dining facilities
Add, univ housing also provides LLC, can be a deal breaker for some.
Dorms like Bromley, the food does suck and if you have a kid in Engineering it’s on the opposite side of campus, but the flip side is Bromley is extremely social, the dorms are way nicer than anything else on campus, there’s a pool, although not used that often, and is heavy Greek Life. It is also very loud. There is an heavy Engineering private dorm, I forget the name of it, but it is WAY too quiet. Bromley is also pricier than the other dorms. Almost everyone from our high school lives in Bromley and it usually fills up quick. There was a lot of covid there this year when they did have their outbreaks since some of the frats/sororities and kids either sheltered in their rooms or just came home which is not what they were supposed to be doing. It’s not for everyone so you need to really know if it’s the right fit for your kid.
Any way you might be able to recall what those engineering heavy dorms housing is called?
I just looked online and maybe it was Hendrick House?
I looked at the pic and definitely that is it.
