Thanks!
So funny I looked at it again this morning and when I flipped it over the other side was orange but it’s completely different than when my daughter and son got in prior years. This was a little more modern. Back then it was a true orange not a reddish orange like now with the blue.
I am on the waitlist for CS program. I am accepted into UMich engineering.
I don’t think I will know about UIUC until mid may or so.
Thanks for the info
how do you know you are on the wait list – mentioned on the decision notification or you contacted the AO?
Yeah, decision letter in portal
To pay the full cost of attendance as OOS, 56K/y, how much a family (3 people) has to earn to make it possible?
One may be earning 40K today, but has 1M in bank
vs
One may be earning 150K today, but has 200K debt.
So finance is trivia. Run EFC, NPC on UIUC site and see if you can afford whatever number comes at end.
To increase the admission chance, this family did not apply for financial aid. And they are making less than 120k/year. I am just wondering how brave they are to pay 56K after-tax money a year.
Earning is just a small part of equation. Assets is another factor. Run those Calculators – Office of Student Financial Aid before making decision one way the other.
As far as fin aid goes, FAFSA will give you <10% of 56K, so still on hook for 50K+. UIUC is not generous for merit aid, but you never know if you win the lottery.
Do you know their expenses?
They never been rich, and live in a small old house. They used all their money for the older sister (afraid of not being admitted, so did not apply for FA either, MIT, 50K+/year), sister just graduated and now the younger son is going to UIUC with 50K+ price tag. They know their son’s stats so low for merit-scholarships.
Why UIUC? what are other options? What major?
Computer Science.
I do not know why UIUC. Maybe this is the best one he can get in with ACT 28.
UIUC is need blind. They should have applied for financial aid. There is also no CSS to fill out there so it would have been much easier. Not applying, does not increase admission chances.
On 120k of annual income (pre tax) and paying 56k in tuition, that does not leave them much to live. They need to factor in what their expenses are without the tuition and take their after tax income and subtract the tuition and see what they have left, if anything. Then factor in their savings, etc and see if they can swing it. The second year they should definitely apply for financial aid. But if it were me if my income were 120k and I had to support my family and had little savings, I would never be able to afford 56k in tuition. What if you lost your job or had an emergency that you needed the money?
They’re not brave at all, they’re taking an undue risk and it’s unnecessary. There may also be other costs that they aren’t even aware of, and travel, as well, dorm set up, clubs, etc.
With that score it is virtually impossible to get into CS at UIUC. On one hand you are saying stats are too low to get merit scholarship and on other hand with that kind of low stats get into CS. It is not adding up.
Are there any hooks or special circumstances or achievement?
I don’t think you have disclosed necessary details about finance for whoever you are asking for.
What figures did you get after running the calculators posted earlier?
I agree, although maybe with that ACT they went test optional because UIUC did not require it the reporting of scores. Something is off here.
@PPofEngrDr @srparent15 Colleges admit students to form a “well-rounded class” instead of a “class with well-rounded individuals”? Based on UIUC’s college data dataset (Student Enrollment), the 25th and 75th percentile of ACT scores for accepted students is 27 and 33. CS is very very selective, but not all students admitted to CS will have ACT of 34 or above.
@Liberty76 are those numbers for entire UIUC or CS?
Entire UIUC - they don’t publish by individual majors or schools. My hypothesis is that even for CS, they would want to fill with a diverse group of students - there can be multiple dimensions of diversity such as academics (wider range of GPA/test scores), extracurricular excellence, sports excellence, leadership excellence, ethnicity, race, gender, legacy, state and country of residence etc. so, I wouldn’t be surprised if they admit a CS student with 28 ACT. My guess is that 70% of admitted CS students would come with academic excellence
Look into ISR (Illinois Street Residence); University Housing. Majority Engineering Students; Closest to Engineering Quad. Includes a tower building and 3-story complex, roughly 1,100 students total. Just went through a MAJOR renovation project: The entire project will be complete for Fall '21.

The Dining & Common Space areas are completed and in use this year; very spacious, very nice layout and variety of dining options:

Rooms remain same size(a bit on the small side), but nicer finishes, and all individual use hall bathrooms/showers (as opposed to communal).
Son lived there as freshman during phase 1 construction all. year. long. Recently went back to tour through the finished product.
