The average ACT for CS at UIUC is 34. Someone with a 28 would definitely need to have gone test optional OR have some extraordinary circumstance.
100%
I know someone with a 23 that got into UIUC so they’re part of that other range but no way were they getting in for CS. This was for the School of Social Work. In the past CS/Engineering did report the range of test scores they accepted. 5 years ago a 30 would need special circumstances to have gotten in, fast forward to now and a 28 even significantly lower would definitely need something super special and no way would anyone ever submit a 28 for CS. There’s nothing to gain at all by doing that. That’s just a fact.
What is the source for the information that average ACT for CS at UIUC is 34? Does UIUC publish this information on their website?
I think you are two much generalizing for that. They don’t have to go OOS for 28 ACT and look for diversity. You may want to explore site Q where a CS professor talks about CS excellence. It is good to have extra qualities in those students but those aren’t deal breaker for 28 ACT., especially @FeiXing has failed to acknowledge anything special for the case referenced.
see my last response. BTW, it includes CS+X programs too.
Oh wow. I’ve read that this is one of the oldest dorms and people complained of lack of AC and other things. From the description, it looks like a complete upgrade. How was the tour of the finished product?
Nice that they redid ISR. That’s the one university dorm we looked at with my son 6 years ago and it felt like a prison in the rooms. Tiny closets, cinder block walls (still there Obviosuly) and many many people walking in and out especially since it’s a large dining hall. It was after that when he decided he wanted to live in a private dorm and chose Bromley.
And UIUC doesnt superscore the ACT so those are single-sitting numbers.
My in state Junior is sitting on a 36/4.0 and UIUC wont be a sure thing for him. My Senior has a 34/3.7 and he decided to go business partly because there was little chance he would get accepted CS due to lack of appropriate ECs and HS courses.
How did your son like Bromley? I hear mixed things - especially about the food. If I can convince my S21 to attend UIUC next year I know he will want to be in the 6-Pack but if not, we may look at Bromley. I don’t see him at PAR/FAR (location) or ISR (personality and location).
Jumping in on the Bromley review… My D19 lived in Bromley and had a generally good experience. The food was the biggest complaint, but I think it’s sort of “fashionable” to complain about the food. I think the bigger issue is the accessibility. As a Bromley resident, you can only eat at Bromley, so if your schedule doesn’t permit, you can’t run home for meals. If you live in University Housing, you can eat at any of the dining options and I believe they even have one at the Union? So the flexibility is much better. Bromley is the “party dorm,” too and many of the residents go Greek. Location is pretty good, though, and we found management to be responsive whenever we had an issue or question. Frankly, I think the place is in pretty decent shape for its age and for the beating it takes. Good luck in your decision!
I have seen this and it says ACT average is 33.7. It’s an AVERAGE and that means there will be ACT scores on either side of this average number. Doesn’t it? What is conclusive from this to say that the admitted class (of CS and/or CS+X) cannot have an OOS student with 28 or 26 ACT score? If we assume that the 75% of admitted students have 35 ACT average, then the remaining 25% of the admitted students would have 29.8% ACT to arrive at a 33.7% average.
Also, did you find similar statistics for other engineering majors? I see this brochure only for CS and couldn’t find for other majors and hence asking. Not sure why there is no uniformity in the information structure and availability.
UIUC CS (in Grainger) had a 4% acceptance rate last year (class of 2024). It is safe to say there weren’t many ACT scores below 30, probably not many below 32.
My S21 is thinking to go Greek, hence the 6-Pack or Bromley thoughts for housing. I was in the 6-pack 35+ years ago and had friends in Bromley…seems not much has changed. With that said, it looks like the Greek system (at least the frats) at UIUC is imploding - 7 of the major frats had charters revoked in last 2 years, 2 others on “revocation held in abeyance”, 2 more of the biggest party houses now registered as “alcohol-free housing” etc etc. Wondering if the same is happening at similar institutions like UMich or Wisco.
I, too, was a six-pack resident (Weston) back in the day; loved it! Lived in PAR my freshman year and while I had fun, I thought the location was less desirable and a little far from the action. You’re right: not much has changed, but there are a couple of new dorms over in the six-pack neighborhood which look very nice. And, yes, the Greek system is under fire pretty much everywhere. Don’t know details about what’s going on at the other schools you note, but would suspect that everyone’s under the microscope. My D19 is in a house - living in this year - and loves it. Gets a little frustrated with the restrictions, but that’s pretty universal across campus for everyone. It’s been a weird year, for sure.
I don’t think engineering mightiness of UIUC is up for debate. So not sure what is your point to deviate to other engineering majors now from an admitted CS guy with 28 ACT.
4% acceptance rate means that for 1000+ admitted students (CS & CS+X), there were 25,000+ applicants for CS & CS+X alone. This doesn’t make sense. 2019 CS & CS+X acceptance rate was 23.35% (per the UIUC reported statistics that @PPofEngrDr posted) - 1,369 students admitted to CS & CS+X out of 5,861 applications to CS & CS+X. CS & CS+X acceptance in the range of 20% to 25% is normal in most colleges.
Like I said, the 4% is CS in Grainger only (so no CS+x), class of 2024, communicated by admissions directly to counselor groups.
I dont think it is impossible for someone with a 28 to get in…I’m sure a few do every year. Its just that a CS applicant would need some incredible ECs to offset that level of ACT score. Co-authored major research paper, won national science olympiad, started successful software consulting business, etc etc. And in this test-optional world, if the applicant had that level of ECs on her/his record, they wouldnt submit the 28.
Just curious…That’s all…I love numbers and the stories that they convey. For example, if 2019 acceptance rate for CS & CS+X is 23.35%, what is it for the other engineering majors? UIUC published 37% “average” acceptance rate for all engineering majors combined. Just trying to get a perspective.
