Thank You. Is that information available publicly somewhere? Also, who are counselor groups? Association of counselors from all high schools across the country?
Not public if you mean on the website, AFAIK. But public in the sense that there are many counselors across the country… including HS, CBO, and independent counselors. Admissions officers regularly send school information, meet with and present to counselors, and pre-covid many schools routinely host counselor groups on campus.
Thank You for that information.
This whole 28 ACT discussion spun from claim by @FeiXing ,who claims a OOS applicants w/o stellar stats and would not make eligible for merit aid got admitted. So I am focusing on that narrow profile only and so far @FeiXing seems not forthcoming about that student for simple questions, but gives a more feeling of hypothetical.
Note also that person has disappeared since that discussion about the 28 ACT and CS.
Also, I can tell you all this, my son who was admitted in CS 6 years ago, had a sorry ACT score of only 30. His math was a 36 and other scores except English were all above 30, however, he decided during junior year that he didn’t care about the ACT or school, wasn’t going to prep for it at all, even though English would’ve been the easiest one to bring up, had a few C+ on his transcript second semester junior year and was accepted to CS at UIUC. We are almost 100% sure he had the lowest ACT of anyone accepted into the program. Why? Because my ex husband had taken him during junior year or maybe it was early senior year to visit and meet with the Engineering Dept Chair and CS Chair and they pretty much told my son his score was too low and the C+ would hurt him and essentially to look elsewhere. They were not sugar coating it one bit. What they didn’t know at the time is that my son had already won some scholarship money to UIUC School of Engineering through something called WYSE (now defunct) where he had the highest score in the entire state as a junior and second highest as a sophomore only second to another kid at our high school. He was a pure savant. His computer background, much of it self taught, and his projects, etc. showed his star power and with all of that etc the was accepted, which is how we also know they take a holistic look. But a 28 ACT means that even if someone had a 36 Math, then the other scores were low, or one other score was substantially low. My son’s English was stil high 20’s. It’s not like it was 25. A 28 means the person received at least 2 points lower average on every section or a sum of 8 total points lower among the 4 sections. So again, a 28 I can pretty positively say they wouldn’t accept, however, again, I don’t know anyone in who would consider turning in a 28 in a test optional year. What’s the rule of thumb? If you’re not at least in the middle 50% don’t turn it in?
@etlindy To answer your question about Bromley, my son who told us he didn’t want to go to college but applied anyway and got into CS, told us in July before he was supposed to leave that he was going to get a job instead. He deferred his acceptance for a year, and went off and got a job. Ultimately he never went back. He wanted Bromley and he would’ve had a single which for him would’ve been the right type of room, but I don’t think he knew what he was in for because I don’t think he would’ve wanted the rowdiness of the greek life kids there and he is not a party kid. The food thing stinks however, my daughter at UT has the same issue because you couldn’t eat at any dorm and the food at her dorm is crap too. I just bought her a couple hundred of Bevo Bucks so she could eat all over campus when she wanted. It’s not a big deal at all. Similar situation with my daughter at Cornell this year. Her plan is her sorority meal plan but she sometimes eats on campus. We don’t love that they’re tied only to one place but they manage. That one actually just ran out of her BRBs (what they call them) this week which were left over from last year before Covid. She had $200 left. So at the end of the day it took her a full year to only spend $200 extra dollars off campus in food. Really not a big deal in the big scheme of things especially if you’re spending the money at Bromley which has different level meal plans. I think you can also get a bag lunch but I may be confusing that with my daughter’s UT dorm.
Hello, DS just received an email that he has been accepted into the Campus Honors Program. He is an aerospace engineering major. Can anyone shed light on this program? Are the requirements cumbersome on top of the engineering curriculum?
Any idea when UIUC will start accepting waitlisted students? Is it after May 15th or so?
Looks like that is a pretty big honor! https://admissions.illinois.edu/Discover/Academics/honors
250 Grainger CS spots, 5800 applications is 4.3%. That is where that number comes from.
Is that an admit rate? No it’s not.
Yield is <30%. So ~14% admit rate… however it was published that the rate was 15% last year.
CSx is around 30%+.
So when you combine the two programs you get ~24%.
I think that is inaccurate as all 5800 applicants aren’t CS only, it includes CS+X too. The way CS+X has expanded in last few years and keep adding new 'X’es, i won’t be surprised if that become prefer choice over CS for so many.
@Greymeer The 5800+ applications are for both CS and CS+X. Isn’t it so? Even if we assume 75% of these 5800+ applications is for CS (and rest 25% for CS+X), the admit rate for CS will still be around 19% to 20% max. Every applicant is competing with at least 4 other applicants for a seat in CS! I find http://profiles.asee.org/profiles/8097/screen/20?school_name=University+of+Illinois+at+Urbana-Champaign a good source of information for engineering colleges across universities. CS is undoubtedly the the major with highest demand and lowest admit rates across universities. The only exception I found is Georgia Tech, where CE admit rates are a couple of % points lower than that of CS (the data shows that for CE, every applicant competes with at least 5 other applicants for a seat) - Admissions
While our twins got into CS, one of them likes applying CS to solve economics problems, while the other is into Computational Biology. So CS+X would have been just as good for them. For those looking for practical applications of CS, the CS+X is a great option!
When will the cost of attendance and merit aid be published?
My daughter received email about merit aid last friday.
We didnt receive anything. Even if we dont get any aid, i was under the impression that we will get to know the total cost before committing. When will they let us know the total cost?
Congrats to your daughter! I wonder if any others have heard, and if we haven’t we should assume we are not receiving any. Was your daughter’s from one of the specific colleges or in-state?
My son also received email with merit aid last Friday. He is in state student and got accepted into Computer Engineering.
Here’c COA for next fall. Can’t tell you about financial aid though. Tuition, Undergraduate Admissions, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Thank you.
My daughter was accepted to Computer Engineering OOS.
how much was the merit aid? i am hearing some kids got 5k/yr
