Ok - So, I visited UIUC earlier this week. I have committed to going there and have been looking forward to going there.

That being said, I was kind of shocked at how rural the place is. There is nothing but corn / agri fields between Chicago and UIUC. I was born and raised in an urban area, so this is a big change for me.

I know that this has probably been discussed in a fair amount of detail but can some of the students who are currently at UIUC please tell me

How is the social life at UIUC?

Do people go out of UC for a social life?

Do we need a car?

Finally, it was 91 in CA when we left & it was 32 in UIUC. Is it this cold usually at this time of the year?

Social life is very good.

People sometimes go out of CU to party but very rarely.

If money isn't a problem, bring a car. It never hurts, but no you do not need one.

I don't know if you visited us at 5 in the morning but it's 72 degrees right now fyi.

depends on your definition of social life...there are tens of thousands of students on campus, and hundreds of events each year...as far as partying...

Social life is awesome if...you're friends with someone in a frat/sorority

You're either 19 or have a fake i.d.

You don't mind spending 5-7$ just to get in the door at the bars/dance bars.

However, if drinking is not your scene, then there many many clubs to join that have meetings and events. Make sure you attend "quad day" and take advantage of groups that you show interest in.

It's an awesome and fun school, and although there is a slight reputation for being a "party" school...the majority of students there are there to learn. But your experience is what you make it.

...oh and you do not need a car. There is free public transportation...and for parking it takes you longer to walk to the parking place than it would for you to just walk to walgreens.
