UIUC vs Purdue vs RPI vs Stony Brook for Computer science

I am gonna make choics now

here is the FA each school can offer to me one year.

UIUC 12k (CS in ENG)
Purdue 30k
RPI 42k
Stony (cheapest)

I know UIUC has good CS program. But it is the most expensive one. I dont know if it is worthy. Purdue's CS is not in engineering school. it is in LAS. So i dont know if it makes any difference.
Stony is a near-home school. Because I m NY resident. It is going to be the cheapest school for me.
I dont know if i m gonna go to grad school. So please give me some advices. THX!

Looking at this list, your best three options are RPI, UIUC, and Purdue.

Assuming you visited and feel equally about each campus environment, that is you like the non-academic offerings, campus atmosphere and student body we will proceed with the objective analysis.

Financially, they set you in approximately equal standing for starting salaries as seen by the NACE surveys.

UIUC-81,118

RPI-74,567

[Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) for Students :: Salary Info & Surveys](<a href=“Students | Career and Professional Development”>Students | Career and Professional Development)

Purdue-74,320
<a href=“Purdue CCO”>https://www.cco.purdue.edu/common/SalaryMay11.pdf</a></p>

Considering PayScale’s ratings of the university (mid-career salary potential) http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2013/research-universities</a></p>

RPI-105,00
UIUC-95,900
Purdue-87,200

Financially, the difference between the schools cost-wise would be (assuming base cost of 42k)

RPI-0
Purdue-12k
UIUC-30k

Based upon pure finances, debt above RPI base cost is:
RPI-0
Purdue-48k
UIUC-120k

Financially, the best prospects appear to be RPI. However, you must make sure you will be happy at RPI. There are fewer “big school” sports and a much smaller campus. If these activities are things you wish to participate in, RPI may not be the school for you. On the flip side, this makes face time with professors easier. It’s a trade off; is UIUC worth a year and a half of your starting salary without including cost of living or taxes to you? Best of luck with your decision.

Note: UIUC salary was pulled from their Computer Science, not Computer Engineering. Computer Engineering pays 71,600; 9,518 dollars less than Computer Science. I reread your post and noticed you said in the engineering discipline, so I amended this post to add the numbers for you.

1) What PayScale does not take into consideration is what will be the current “hot technology” at that time and how much the industry is paying for that current hot technology.

2) CS programs NOT in the engineering college DOES NOT matter as ABET accreditation is not important for CS as other engineering majors. As I have stated before, U-Wisconsin, U-Maryland and U-Texas CS grads do just fine and their CS programs are not part of the engineering college.

3) I did not know about Stony Brook’s rep until I visit this site. If its rep is as good as many posters have said, then it would be the best choice. You don’t need to spend a lot of money for a CS degree. The software engineering industry is NOT like the business/finance industry. Hiring managers are not going to ask your school in the first sentence like the finance industry does.

I agree that ABET accreditation does not matter, but large public colleges do admit by major, which may make transferring to a major in a different college difficult, thus limiting the OP’s options. And the engineering major to which the OP was admitted pays less, making this particularly relevant. The reason why Stony Brook’s salary is unlisted is because I could not find it online, not due to the program.

Just like Purdue those days :). Ah, bring back Gene Keady!!

GlobalTraveller’s right on the money once again - A lot of the ‘hot’ tech stuff is stuff that no sane Computer Science program will ever teach… Stuff that kids may have picked on internships and the like…

I have some friends in stony. and later on, they all want to transfer. But someone here is saying that stony is really good for CS. so i just dont know how to choose.

I dont like the environment in RPI. I think it is too boring lol.

But UIUC is really expensive. Will i have any chance to get more scholarship after i enter UIUC?

the only person who says stony brook is really good is that QCStudent guy, who is an absolute fanatic and won’t listen to any reason.

PayScale school rankings do not account for the mix of majors at the various schools. The top schools are mostly investment banking recruiting targets or heavily-engineering focused schools.

Stony Brook is well respected and recruited at for CS.

@Jamesmadison, Stony Brook is a top 50 school for CS

@asker, I doubt payscale is reliable and stony brooks is cheap and great for CS

@lightnin then how is it if compare to UIUC? the extra cost for UIUC is worthy or not?
