UIUC? WILL CHANCE BACK!

Hey guys :(

So I have a problem here, my GPA is very low (3.1) and my ACT is very high (36). My classes are a mix of honors and regular with some APs, and my ECs are quite good, I'm also a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. My GPA is literally killing me because I know I could have done better but back then in freshman year and part of sophomore year, I was a pretty care-free. My grades improved in sophomore year and I managed all As junior year. Question is...where can I get accepted? I have a LOT of Cs freshman and especially beginning of sophomore year and there IS a steady incline, then again, my classes junior year were a little easier. I'm so worried that I won't get accepted anywhere besides Benedictine (great college, I just don't want to be so close, it's literally 20 minutes away). Do I have a change at UIUC, UIC, Purdue, DePaul..any Midwestern colleges anyone can recommend? PLEASE PLEASE DO CHANCE ME, I WILL CHANCE BACK.

I’m from the Chicago area and have actually applied to a lot of these schools, and I also read this forum a lot so hopefully I can help you.

First off, what is your intended major? That makes a big difference at some of these schools (UIUC, Purdue, et al)

The incline in grades is a very big help, it was for me at least. Just make sure that you can explain it in your essay and how you won’t have it happen in college.

Definitely, definitely apply to Ohio State. They give some really good scholarships for your ACT and are a very good school too. I visited a week ago, and they have a great engineering program and a great campus.

Same thing goes for Iowa State (though, I did not visit there)

Let us know what your major is, and some other useful info, and I’ll try giving you some chances.

Wow, awesome ACT score! Really impressive. Obviously your grades are the biggest issue here, but I would say your ACT makes your chances quite good. I would say it’s a solid low match/low reach.

Good luck!

Thanks! How bout em other colleges? Anyone?

I want to major in Hospital Administration but I will be taking a pre dental course load, the hospital admin is more of an interest/backup. I’m REALLY worried that I won’t get anywhere! Can anyone give me SOLID matches for places in/near the Midwest?

The fact that you made GPA improvements is going to play a big part. I’m no expert on the Midwest, but I’d say you’d have a good chance at many placed you would apply. GPA is a part of a bigger picture, you’re smart.

The upward trend in GPA is good, and your ACT really helps your chances. Take hard classes senior year to show that your upward trend is continuing, and then you should be a match academically. Make sure you have enough EC’s.

Chance back
<a href=“Chances for UVA and Vanderbilt. Will chance back. - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1634747-chances-for-uva-and-vanderbilt-will-chance-back-p1.html</a></p>

I’d say a high match for UIUC. the ACT score looks more than good enough. It would be helpful to see your EC’s, but I think you have a good chance.

Just let you know that you will not be a NM finalist because of the grades. For oos, UIUC is very competitive particularly for engineering. Also, it is very expensive as they have little aid for oos students. Purdue may be easier as they have a lower barrier for admission but a higher drop out rate. For any school, your ACT is high enough as it cannot be higher (LOL). Your GPA may be your hinder. Also, UIUC does not accept recommendation letter but just your own essay. So there is little additional thing that may help your application there.

I actually live in illinois and tuition isn’t a problem for me. My ECS are numerous and I have a lot of leadership positions. If only I could change that stupid GPA!! How about Loyola? I really want to hear of solid matches

Is that your unweighted GPA? What is your weighted GPA? I’d say you’ll do fine at DePaul, UIC and Loyola. UIUC has become more competitive, but may be fine as well. You definitely should apply. I don’t know much about Purdue so can’t answer that one. My S was accepted into UIUC and DePaul (business majors in both) with a 32 ACT and 3.5 UWGPA/3.9 WGPA. He got the top scholarship at DePaul and honors program as well. He had the same issue with Freshmen grades that significantly went up Sophomore ad Junior years.
