UK and HK Medical Schools: where can I work after graduation?

Hello everyone! I am a high school senior planning to gap and prep for UK and HK medical school. But before deciding to gap or not, I want to know more about medical school abroad.

  1. With a foreign medical education, where can I work? I hope to work in Hong Kong and other major Asian cities, but I want to know if this is possible.
  2. Is it harder as a gap student? I've only studied in a US high school for two years, although I have a green card. Because of my short time here, I've only been able to take AP Bio the first year and AP Physics the second year (didn't take Chem bc our school has a terrible Chem teacher and restricts students to only taking one AP science). I'm gapping because I'm not prepared for the application yet. I'm missing some test scores. I also want to ask if I should self-study AP Chem during the gap year. My AP scores won't come out soon enough for the app and there will be no predicted score since I'm on a gap year.
  3. How hard is the UKCAT and BMAT? Is it possible to prepare by myself in a year?
  4. What are my chances? (The good old question at CC) I attended elementary school in the US, spent the rest of my years in China until junior year. Spent junior+senior year at a US boarding school. SAT: 1560 ACT: 34 GPA: 4.01 SAT2: Bio 750 Math2 760 (trying to decide if I should retake math2 because I usually get a 800 on my practice exams) AP: AP Bio 4 AP Lang 4 AP Calc AB 4 (really sad first year in the US for me..I had an A in Bio+Lang and a near perfect score in AB..either our school has a really bad education or I really messed up on my APs..) Senior APs: BC Physics Lit APES US Gov Have been doing medical research at the local university for two years and have a research portfolio with a research abstract, rec letter from my professor, and research position summary

Also, I forgot to mention, I’m hoping for Oxford/Cambridge/Imperial’s med school and University of HK’s med school.

I don’t think you have a chance at any UK university for medicine, I’m afraid, with no Chemistry AP, and a 4 in Bio. You really need the best possible scores for medicine, and there are so very few places for internationals it’s even more competitive for them.

Thank you! Do you know if it’s possible for U of Hong Kong?

No idea, sorry. Try posting in the international section.

Sorry to bother you again, but if I didn’t apply to medical schools but to other majors, would I have a shot at Oxford/Cambridge?

You would need at least three 5s in relevant APs for Oxford, and five for Cambridge to start with.

Not sure how HKU admits med students, they are very competitive nevertheless. One thing I do know that if you want to practice in HK knowledge in
Chinese and Cantonese dialect is a must.

I grew up in a Cantonese speaking region in China so that’s why I was looking to work in HK; but never less thank you for the heads up. It would be very hard to interact with patients without these two languages.
