i know this is the NU board, but any un-biased opinions would be helpful
: ]

Northwestern is the best school. UM honors would be next, followed by NYU; I'd pick UM honors if it's considerably cheaper.

The above poster is spot-on.

Unless NYU is giving you a ridiculous aid package, I would strike it from your list. NYC cost of living is astronomical for a student, and the school is a tier below NU and Michigan in terms of quality.

Back in the day (6 years ago--yikes!), I chose Northwestern over UMich Honors and a handful of others, but only because I was out of state, so the cost differential between the two would have been negligible.

I absolutely loved NU and would do it again in a heartbeat, but knowing what I know now, you will be at no disadvantage should you graduate from Michigan as opposed to NU, so go with UMich if you are paying in-state tuition. Otherwise, go where you feel most comfortable.

If there isn't a significant difference in $$, go with NU.

Otherwise, go with UoM honors.

i actually live in TX...so i'm not sure about costs yet w/out my schloarship info.

if cost isnt a huge issue, which it most likely wont be- im kinda suprised that everyone on here as ranked NYU 3rd. I was leaning that way (besides NU), just bc of the intership possibilities/generally central location of NYC. I'm sure I'm thinking way to far in advance, but at NYC i could go for an intership at the UN, or a top law firm (will be studying IR, then going on to law school). Knowing this about me, do yall still think UM over NYU?

and thanks for all the input, its been very helpful : )

Wow. Well, go with your comfort zone, 'cause that's definitely what's most important, but I just don't think that internship opportunities are any better at NYU than at NU or Michigan. Most big NYC organizations take students from all over the country (the Manhattan political consulting firm where I landed my first job after my master's had interns from Michigan, Tulane, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Bowdoin).

Go to NYU because you like NYU the best, not because you think that somehow being geographically closer to the UN and law firms will make it easier to get internships at New York locations. That's really not the case.

Anyway, this isn't to discourage you from NYU, because that's not my place, but look at the overall experience when choosing a college. If you are in excellent financial shape, then this won't matter, but being a student in NYC is not an inexpensive endeavor (my one-year M.A. program cost me about $60,000 total, and almost half of that was simply the cost of living day-to-day in Manhattan).

You will find New York internships coming from any of those three schools.

Frankly, (many) UMers think they go to an Ivy league school, and the administration more so. This is my perspective from living in Michigan. However, they are a good school, so don't ignore them.

wow mtgoddess this is the exact decision im trying to make right now... except im into medill at northwestern. let me know what you decide...i think im ruling out nyu but i dunno between umich honors and nu

S is in at NW, Mich-honors....also, considering WUSTL and Emory. We're visiting all four in a whirlwind starting Thursday.

MTGoddess - I can understand your predicament. Part of the appeal of NYU is simply its amazing location, which can't be beat in my opinion. It is sometimes hard to let go of the weaker school, and you, like myself, may find yourself searching for reasons to keep NYU in the running. If you visit all 3 and like NYU the most, go there! It's a great school (though no Northwestern unless you're at Stern) that will only become better over the years.

Personally, if I were choosing between those three and money wasn't a factor, I'd go to NYU, but as I said in my original response, the most intelligent decision would be Northwestern or UMich honors if you're in-state.

thanks for all the advice- i just recently got into tufts, so its come down to tufts and NU now...and while ive visited the tufts campus (pretty + i love boston), i havnt seen NU yet! if the campus is as georgous as everyone keeps saying it is, and chicago is nice (as ive also heard it is), then ill prob be going with NU!

Do visit. The campus is wonderful (it has 2 beaches!).

I was way turned off by Tufts when I visited (again, this was ages ago) and chose not to apply, but people do seem to like it. I think that it's the weakest of your options, though.
