@SQBrit what does the application status say?under review or common application. Btw, you guys have to hear back by this week or early in the week after and if you don’t I recommend you call the admission office.
@Mostapha - DS’s Spire account says “under review”. He was deferred and it changed to “Under Review” over 2 weeks ago.
I have a feeling his application is being tossed back and forth across a table, “no I don’t want it… you take it”… “no I don’t want it… you take it…” Just my vivid imagination, lol
Hey y’all,
So, I just got accepted to UMass Amherst class of 2019! But I’m facing a diemma right now. I’ve been quite set on majoring in Computer Science, but Amherst accepted me on the condition that I major in Environmental Science. How hard/easy is it to change majors? What should I do?
I’d very much appreciate any useful info, thanks!
@Wesley01pd2015 looks like a lot of folks are not getting accepted for Computer Science. I posted this in another thread but it might be helpful here
At the accepted student day they specifically called out computer science, engineering and Isenberg as being the most competitive majors for on campus transfers. You will have to do well is several predictor classes such as the intro programming class and calculus and then apply. There is no guarantee they will take you. If you truly want to be a computer science major and have been accepted into that major at another school you may want to consider your options.
Here is the detailed info on how to transfer if you are on campus - good luck
@SQBrit I’ve heard that a lot of the deferred students are still waiting, but you should hear back soon my application status changed to under review 2 weeks before I got my acceptance letter, so hopefully your son is fine … I’m sure he is neither rejected nor wait-listed yet, if he is they would have sent him a letter already. I think they have reviewed the application and you will hear back this week or next Monday.
@newengland2012 - I think that is excellent, sound advice to all the budding CS students out there. CS is very competititve. Honestly, I had no idea. Do you think that it also makes sense for a student to consider a minor in CS if they can’t make it their major? My feeling is that the demand for this degree is so strong, that a minor might be sufficient. Just a thought.
@Mostapha - you are great. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
my son’s status just updated to waitlist on spire. No letter yet.
@Massmom25. Bummer. I hate waitlists…
Just getting a quick opinion, do you think UNH business program is comparible to Isenberg?
S applied regular decision for Mechanical Engineering & his status has been under review for months. Not sure what to think at this point. S has pretty much ruled it out, but you never know.
@tmahoney I am wondering the same thing. I got into the UNH business school and am still waiting to hear from UMass. Not sure what to do…
We are in state and my daughter just received her letter yesterday that she’s been waitlisted and a friend of hers received her denial letter. Several of other friends from school are still waiting but will probably hear today. It seems all types of letters are going out the same time. We are sending in a deposit to her 2nd school choice anyway since the majority of the waitlisted don’t get in for the fall. At least she can still look forward to Umass in the spring! Good luck to everyone still waiting. We know how excruciating the wait is as she applied EA back in October.
@barcafan30 @tmahoney - UNH is a good school but in general they are ranked below UMass Amherst and especially their business program. This being said if you are instate for NH I would strongly consider UNH since it would be quite cheap. (Though UMass does offer slightly reduced tuition for NE students)
BTW- here’s a list, I think I posted it before: http://www.bloomberg.com/bschools/rankings#5
Note- Only UNH’s MBA program is ranked, not their undergraduate. UMass is #36 in the US
@SQbrit & @mustapha13 Am I the only one who still hasn’t heard back yet for RD? Because all I see is deferred students left, which makes me feel like I’m the only RD student left
Nah @Darksand99, you’re not only RD student left. My son filed RD common app w/ UMass on 11/8/14; on 11/11/14 the portal showed all materials received and application ‘under review.’ Not a change to portal since; not a word from UMass. Nada. He has probably forgotten he applied since he’s now deciding between options at Penn State and UDel. I check on here and on his portal for curiosity – I don’t think he’s checked the portal in more than a month! I guess if he got in he’d consider it, but I think his interest level diminished as each month passed by without even an email from UMass. Out of sight, out of mind.
@brucemag - if he applied 11/8 - doesn’t that mean he applied EA? @Darksand99 - I do know of one DS friend who applied RD and hasn’t heard back. I’m sure there are many more who are waiting in the wings. They are patiently and quietly waiting which I gave up doing a month ago! lol. I would think if you multiple 10 kids in an average sized HS in MA that are still waiting for a decision- that is a lot of students. That’s why I find the 2000 # of remaining acceptances that the Admissions Dept tossed out back @ 3/21 so hard to believe. Really, it takes the department ~4 weeks to process - let’s be generous here - 6000 remaining applications? But it was so easy to accept the first 19K? I guess I just answered my question here. For good or for bad - I think the remaining candidates are getting a very thorough physical here. ;))
@brucemag wow I guess that goes to show how much miscommunication there is at UMass’ admissions office. Congrats on your son getting into Penn State! Unfortunately for me I’m relying on UMass as one of my options. Well I still got until April 15th @SQbrit I find it unbelievable that it’s taking them so long to process 2000 more apps when other colleges get 30,000 and manage to have a set date. May 1st is soon and UMass is cutting it too close!
@Darksand99 I am RD and still waiting. Nothing in mail today
