@Rebecca1112 - Are you OOS? The chancellors scholarship is sometimes given out to OOS students to help compensate for the increased price. Also, assuming you only chose two selective fields they probably didn’t have space or you slipped under their stats. This being said, being undecided can be a great thing! Many students change their major at one point.
@SQBrit Congrats! finally heard back, I was sure your son would get in … hope I will meet him there!
@Mostapha - Thank you. Also thank you for staying to the closing messages of this thread, rallying us on! I am confident you will be hugely successful at UMass Amherst and make the most of the great opportunities/freedoms that the USA can provide. I am not American myself, but I know that the rights/freedoms that are guaranteed here are a wonderful gift. Enjoy!
@SQBrit Thank you, I’m really thankful to be here in this country and with great people like you!
Congratulation again! the waiting have paid!
Looks like my d is offically in the last to hear club…spire status still ‘under review.’ let’s hope today’s mail brings good news…
@SQBrit-Can relate. Went through this 2 years ago with my DS. He ended up at UCONN for Mechanical Engineering. Got in UMass Undeclared with a 3.3 gpa (I started getting really worried when at the Fall Open House they said basically you need at least a 3.5 to even be considered for Engineering.) and 1980 SATs. Wish they had the Exploratory Track program at that time. Maybe he would’ve ended up at UMass but since he got directly into Mech Eng at other schools and UCONN was his top choice anyway, its all good!
My S got into UConn For Mechanical Engineering, but it’s too much money. Got into UMaine & UNH with merit scholarships for Mechanical Engineering - those are his current top choices. UMass I think is a great school, but he will not consider going in undeclared, scholarship or not.
@ConfusedMominMA - DS did not apply for Engineering at UMass (a good thing - I now think!) and may not have been accepted if he had. He DID apply to UConn for Biomedical Eng. and got waitlisted for…wait for it… his second choice major. The only school that accepted him for General Engineering was VT and we visited that school last weekend.
This is not my choice (dammit), but if it were, I would pick Virginia Tech. I think it suits his personality better. However, there is something to be said for the devil you know and UMass Amherst feels a lot more familiar (comforting) for my still very young 17 year old. Plus, his friends told him the girls are really pretty at UMass. Sigh…
Just thought I’d throw this information out for people interested in UMass Isenberg. Yesterday we received some information from them that I have never seen before. Might be handy for people interested in applying in the coming year.
Even though UMass’ Acceptance rate is around 61%, Isenberg’s is 33%.
Along with an average SAT score of 1293 (M+CR) and gpa of 3.93. At the Accepted students day on Saturday the Asst Dean was saying that it is amazing that they are not accepting kids with gpas of 3.5-3.6! UMass Isenberg is not the old safety school some of us grew up thinking it was!
@ConfusedMominMA by what you’re saying Isenberg is top notch, so in your opinion if my daughter got into Isenberg from the waitlist would it be worth changing schools? She selected option 1 for Fall of 2015 only because she wants to remain at a school for all four years without the extra work of transferring. I am in state so the cost wouldn’t affect us much. However, since she was waitlisted she has been looking more into her other options so I don’t want her to fall in love with the other school and be torn if she does happened to get a call in the summer saying she got in…
@PAR403 - I’m sorry to hear that. By now, you must feel like stalking your mailbox. Keep us posted!
@tmahoney - That is hard for me to say. I don’t know.
Would she be ok if she got the call from Umass over the summer but once she started at another school in the fall that she would just stay there then?
@SQBrit - Thanks, That gave me a chuckle! Good way to pick a school!
@ConfusedMominMA Yes, she just said that where she starts in the Fall is where she is staying. Due to the longevity of the admissions process this year, especially with waiting so long wait to only be waitlisted, turned her off a little bit. Umass Amherst has been her top choice since sophmore year, but she is now second guessing her thinking. Her main thing is being able to network with not only Alumni, but companies that the university has worked with in the past which is something she is sure she will be able to do at Umass. My thing is that you can earn a business degree anywhere, but Umass seems to be a standout. Right now her options are Merrimack College, UNH, UNE, and Umass Lowell
I just found a common data report on last years admissions. Out of 1403 freshmen that accepted a spot on the waitlist only 26 of them were admitted, just under 2%. The year before that they admitted 106 from the waitlist. We’ve already sent in the deposit to my daughter’s 2nd choice so at this point I think unless she falls in love with that school, Umass is her escape plan for the spring semester. http://www.umass.edu/oir/sites/default/files/publications/cds/common_data_set.pdf (information for freshman applicants is on page 5)
@SQBrit So glad you finally heard, I was right too…definitely thought he would get in. As far as visiting campus goes, definitely encourage your son to do that. I took my son to Stonybrook last weekend, and we both agreed to eliminate it based on that visit. My son has already visited UMass, but I’m going to take him for the open house day late this month as he hasn’t made a final decision. At this point, he is torn between UMass and Rollins (totally different school)and a waitlist possibility.
@SQBrit Too funny…biomedical engineering at some schools, science at others…just like my son! He will be premed at Umass if he attends. BTW, UConn is another option for them both. UConn usually lets in quite a few from the waitlist. Then what are you going to do? BTW, you mentioned you weren’t American, are you English?
So waitlist results for the Fall 2015 option is given mid-May right? And the results for the Spring 2016 option is given out during the Summer?
@canigoback - sorry I should have given you credit too. Thanks for your support. Our sons are very similar. DS is very strong in math/science so bioengineering seemed like a natural choice. He also wants to apply to med school. I told him he would be a natural for a pathologist or anesthesiologist - in other words if the patients were either dead or asleep. He didn’t think that was funny.
Yes, I’m a Brit where humor is prized and celebrated. So naturally I gave birth to a son who is deadly SERIOUS and PRECISE and can only make me laugh when he is not trying.
Uconn is still a possibility even though they waitlisted DS to his second choice major - cognitive science. I picked that major (long tortuous story) so I felt doubly insulted. Who ever heard of being waitlisted to your second choice major?!
What made you decide to eliminate stoneybrook? Just curious. Also I have to do some research on Rollins. That’s a new one to me.
@PAR403 - any news? You are not forgotten.
Well, after speaking to his teachers, S has decided to consider UMass Amherst afterall, even with an undeclared major lol. I swear these kids. …we are going to the open house on the 26th!
