UMASS Chances?

I am a current Junior who will take the SAT in a month, which i am shooting for around 1250-1300 range and I am take the ACT a couple days after hoping 27-30

My GPA is 3.4 UW and 3.6 W

  • this is due to the fact that freshmen year I took an engineering elective which at the end of the year I received a C-. (I want to either drop that grade or retake it but for right now I am not sure what will happen.) In that year if i would of not taken that class my fresh man year GPA would of been 3.5 UW and 3.7 W but instead it was 3.3 UW and 3.5 W. Sophomore year 3.5 UW, and 3.67 W, this year I did very well, except in guitar which i received a B. overall so far it would probably end up 3.5 UW maybe 3.6 UW and 3.7-3.8 W. A major question I have is does UMASS recalculate GPA so that they only count you core classes. (English,Spanish, math, SS, ETC.)

Freshman year: Honors Geometry and English
Sophomore year: Honors English
Junior year: Honors Pre-calc and Physics also Uconn/Ap Micro and Marco economics
Senior year: I plan on taking Uconn/AP Spanish and Honors English

I have 200 + Community service (around 50 were in foreign countries)
I was in the Chess club and Basket Ball Club (not team)
Planning to be in 2-3 clubs by senior year…
President of Creative writing club
In National honors society

Thx

You will definitely get into the University itself. I don’t know what your major is, so I can’t gauge whether you’ll get into the specific major. Probably not honors college. For reference, I was invited to the honors college with a 1370 & a 3.8 WGPA, but I’m surprised I was invited to CHC. Good luck!

I think you have a good chance to get in, but maybe not CHC. I got admitted in February and I had 1320/29 and around 3.49 UW with a D second semester junior year, so I think you’re solid. Then again, my school doesn’t have a lot of applicants to UMass.

Umass Boston, Umass Darmouth, Umass Lowell you are in, Umass Amherts I’m not sure.
Good luck.

Upcoming freshman here. While reading your stats, I was thinking you might not be able to get in. However, once I read the extracurricular activities, I think you might have a chance. The community hours and president of writing club makes you stand out a bit more. The only caveat I see is your grades and courses. If possible, get your grades up and take more challenging courses!

Anyway, here’s a bit of me for your reference:
Accepted into College of Engineering but not CHC.
GPA: ~3.2 UW, ~4.15 W (unofficial, but according to UMass’s weighing system, it should be around this number)
SAT: 1320 combined (620 on writing, 700 on math, 6/6/6 on essay)

Extracurricular:
Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, Yearbook club, Math club, Co-founder of Permaculture club.
150+ hours in creativity, activity, and service hours (for IB curriculum)

Note that these activities were from junior and senior year alone.

Regardless, I think you have a chance! Just take challenging courses and most importantly, get your grades up! Your extracurricular activities are currently your strong points so that’s good for now (although don’t abandon all extracurriculars). I would still apply to UMass Amherst anyway because why not? Good luck!
