UMD Banneker Key

These are some examples of off-campus, privately owned apartments: https://www.terrapinrow.com/

South Campus Commons (SCC): https://southcampuscommons.com/

For all off-campus apartments and SCC, students pay for 12 months of rent. (They have the option to sublet or re-let for the summer if they can find someone).

There is another option called The Courtyards, which is economical, but has a terrible location.

I mention the apartments only because in some areas of the country, students save money by moving off campus. That’s not usually the case in College Park unless the student is a good cook or purposely frugal (shops at LIDL, etc.).

SCC and other off-campus apartments require individual renters insurance and a parent guarantor for rental payments.

Lol, Courtyards is desirable to students with classes near there.

“ Students living in these communities sign leases with Capstone On-Campus Management, rather than Residence Halls and Dining Agreements with the Department of Resident Life, as they do for the on-campus, University-owned residence halls. Leasing eligibility for any students who submit lease applications for The Courtyards or South Campus Commons is determined by the Department of Resident Life.”

What are the dates for the BK interviews this year?

3/2

Is Banneker key primarily based on academic stats ?

No. “ . In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the selection committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders, who as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.

So is it full application including essays, Ecs and grades etc?

No. Candidates of BK are chosen for interview from the regular admissions application.
Please See the website.
“ We are dedicated to enrolling the most talented and academically promising students. And we offer generous merit scholarships to back that up.

Merit scholarships provide financial awards to some of the University of Maryland’s most academically talented incoming students. These competitive awards are based on past academic performance and potential to excel at the university, not financial need.

Students who submit their admission application and all required materials by the November 1 early action deadline are automatically reviewed for merit scholarships. No additional application is necessary. Please review the sections below for information on eligibility and when students are notified of scholarships they have been awarded.

Does anyone know if all of the merit scholarship notifications have been sent already? Are they through email or regular mail?

B/K, Presidential and Dean scholarship notifications were sent out earlier this month via email.
I don’t know if there are any other merit scholarships offered by UMD but I think not.

Did you apply to College of Agriculture and Natural Resources? If so, they announced that admitted incoming freshmen may apply for a AGNR scholarship by March 1.

“The deadline to submit a New Freshman Scholarship application is March 1, 2022. Students who submit a complete application by the deadline are automatically considered for every scholarship administered by AGNR for which they are eligible.

Notifications will be sent by April 1, 2022.“

Has anyone heard anything about when BK final award notifications will go out? I know the official “by April 1” date, but it looks like in past years it was more mid-March. Kind of hoping for today, before UMD goes on spring break…

UMD still has another week before spring break. You may still find out before.

Thanks for that correction – I had their spring break wrong!
