UMD Business School

What do you guys think is more important when considering a career in finance or consulting (I want to either become a financial planner or a management consultant)? Does being a top 20 undergrad business program mean anything or is would it be better to transfer to more prestigious schools such as Georgetown or Nyu (I'm going to Maryland for free btw)? Also what is your view on the Smith School of Business at UMD?

if you're going for free, i would stay.

Leo187um, I plan on applying to Robert H. Smith school of business also. Would you mind explaining how the school is academic-wise? I plan on combining accounting and finance btw.

Well your not going to be able to double major until your junior year because you need to take the prerequisite accounting courses. Academically I guess it's pretty good. The one bad thing about UMD is that they tend to have classes that fail students on purpose, forcing students to take more courses and thus pay more money to the school. For example English 101 is a class that they only give out a few, probably 3 or 4, A's in a class of 300+ kids, and a majority gets C's and D's so that hurts you GPA a lot (thank God I had transfer credits for that class). But for most classes easy B hard A.

forgiven, I dunno UMD in general seems to me like such an AVERAGE school. I want to attend a college that has prestige. What are your views when you hear Smith school?

ehhh maryland isn't bad at all. i live in NJ and i used to go to rutgers. i guess rutgers and maryland is on the same level, but i transferred to umich-ross. i dunno man. so far, i feel like i should've just stayed put at rutgers. i mean yeah, at umich we get all the top companies to recruit and umich is more widely known, but i honestly don't think it's worth the extra money. although, i would've paid the extra money to attend an ivy league school.

and i just read that you would go into financial planning.
you wouldn't need to go to a top school for that.

but management consulting is a whole different story.

yea thats why I'm contemplating to transfer to a better school. what makes you say you shoulda stayed at Rutgers? You don't like Ross? And also ould it be a better choice to stay at MD and aim for something prestigious for an MBA like Harvard, Wharton, etc? The only reason that I might want to stay is because Booz Allen recruits here.

for the money i don't think it was worth it to transfer. i'm paying double the amount i would've paid at rutgers.

the smith school is a really good school and going there for free is a pretty good deal. i dont know if you know but it is actually ranked higher then georgetown..i dont know about this years ranking in management but it was tied for #10 last year..so i think you have yourself a real good deal for business graduating debt free from smith is probably worth much more then paying the hefty price tag to go to georgetown

Yea, but rankings aren't everything. I would say that for the top business careers(ie IB or management consulting) overall prestige is more important. I think going to Georgetown would be better career wise and from a networking standpoint.
