What is your opinion on UMD business vs Rutgers business schools? Are they similar? Is one MUCH better than the other? Tuition is not an important factor. I have been accepted to both. no merit money from either. in state to rutgers.
U of Maryland is ranked #52, Rutgers is ranked #72.
For business, U of Maryland is ranked 7 spots higher.
I would choose U of Maryland, although you can’t go wrong with either.
Two very good choices - congratulations. IMO a lot would depend on your family’s ability to pay. I would not take out loans, have anyone in my family take out loans or cause my family to go into any kind of financial distress to attend UMD over Rutgers. But if the price differential is not an issue at all I’d probably pick UMD. I happen to prefer the campus/atmosphere at UMD and would consider the somewhat higher rankings as a bonus. Can’t go wrong at either school though.
I can’t comment on Rutgers’ business program (although my nephew graduated from Rutgers and had a great experience), but I have a freshman son at UMD in the business school. One thing that was attractive about UMD was the number of AP credits that they accepted. He went in with 38 credits and they all pretty much counted for something. He had 6 I think that weren’t part of the gen ed requirements nor business, but they counted as lower level electives which he needed about 9ish credits for. So far he has had MANY opportunities to interact/network with various companies. He has had opportunities to apply for several internships in his major - finance - but he is still waiting to hear from some and still interviewing for others. They also have many “fellowship” programs. All students accepted into the Smith School are in Freshman Fellows. They apply for the Sophomore Wall Street Fellows, which is for finance majors. They have other fellowships for other majors, too. They also have some type of Global Mindset Consulting Colloquium. Not sure exactly what that is - I just know you apply for it as you do for the other fellowship programs. He has even had an opportunity to TA a business stats class this semester which has helped him meet lots more students as well as something different to put on his resume at such a young age. Some of the older kids he talks to have already accepted positions to large firms, some some firms, and some still looking. I’m sure it will depend on how much effort the student puts into his education. Overall my so is VERY pleased with his choice as well as the opportunities he has had so far.
@newjerseygirl98 @happy1 @davenmame Thank you all so much for your comments! UMD is the better choice! Buuutt I also got accepted to penn state business school, which is VERY high ranked. If I remember its in the top 25 (wow) What are your thought on penn state business school vs UMD business school. I got accepted to Penn state as an entrepreneurship major and UMD as business management. no merit money from either. tuition is not important my family can afford it.
Choose between PSU and UMD if tuition is not important - do check with your parents though.
Both are similar - large state schools, excellent business schools, D1 spectator sports - but there are differences:
Penn State is in a pleasant college town where you’ll find anything you may need as a student; to reach a big city such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, NYC, DC, or Baltimore, you’ll need to take a bus such as Megabus (possible on weekends).
UMD is in a so-so town, more like a suburb, not very walkable. However, you’re a 1-hour metro ride to DC.
have you visited both, done an overnight (attend a large freshman class and a seminar class; eat in the cafeteria; talk with students; read the campus paper…)?
Congrats! At this point I really think it should come down to which school you prefer. A number of the differences well described above. Also keep in mind that the student body at Penn State is (I think) over twice the size of UMD. If you can I’d suggest you go back to your two top choices for accepted students day and see which you prefer.
I don’t know anything about PSU campus (but the Biz school is excellent, congrats!) But I have heard that UMD is rather sprawling and there isn’t enough housing to go around. I think that parking might have been scarce too. If those things are important to you, you might want to read up to confirm. Might have been an unfair disgruntled student review. But UMD is also close to DC if you want access to a real city.
