@pkgny2022 Yeah, I’ve wondered the same thing…I suppose, technically, if your first choice is not an LEP and if for some unknown reason they couldn’t place you in that major then they would put you in your alternate…? Maybe it’s even just something they used to ask before they officially designated some programs as LEPs and they never updated the application? Who knows? Maybe its another way to get insight into your interests…? One of the great unsolved mysteries of Maryland…haha

please chance me because UMD is my top choice!

Cmon dude, are you really nervous about getting in?

I have a son who is a freshman in college and a son who is a senior in high school. Both applied Maryland. My older son and I were on a trip last year and based on where I remember us being when he found out he got into Maryland, I strongly believe he found out on Thursday the 26th last year. So I’m crossing my fingers that my younger son and all of you find out today. As for the time, I think it was late afternoon (edited to remove the “before 5 pm” statement).

@pkgny2022 @Mason135 I asked that question at the Smith Friday Business tour. They said if you were not selected to the LEP, you would be put into Letters and Sciences and would work with an advisor to get you the requirements to transfer to the LEP. But no guarantee you would be accepted as a transfer either. No idea the purpose for the alternate major. The tour was done before the application so that question wasn’t asked by anyone.

@StrGzrMaryland my daughter is a freshman at Maryland and she found out Friday1/27/17 around 5pm. She was admitted for spring semester 2018 and chose the Freshman Connection Program. I can imagine the hundreds of phone calls the admissions people would get if decisions were released on a Thursday. We had time to do a bit of research, read past CC posts and didn’t have to call the admissions people that Monday morning. Good Luck to all. UMCP is a great value and even though it’s HUGE, there is individual attention for the students. She has had a great experience in Freshman Connection and just started her classes yesterday as a “regular” student!

My son is waiting to hear and wondering about freshman connection. Did she feel like a “regular student” in the fall? Could she live on campus? My impression is FC iS just about registering and taking classes later in the day. But that you’re a normal freshman? Any info would be appreciated

@Ny27 there is great info on FC in this tread:

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1959228-freshman-connection-questions-and-hopefully-answers.html#latest

when we found out she got in Spring semester we were concerned and a little disappointed. But considering how many of her well-qualified classmates were denied from UMCP we eventually felt blessed.

Pretty much her experience was exactly the same as a regular freshman. she found a roommate (not freshman connection student) and stayed in a regular dorm (FC students guaranteed housing) etc. except:

she had to take all her classes after 3pm. These classes were all about 30-40 students except for general chem which was about 100 students. She loved sleeping in and having all day to get work done. There are about 1000 students in FC so you are not alone!

she couldn’t participate in a few clubs that met in the evenings. but they understand and will welcome her this semester. for these clubs, she attended events on the weekends that they sponsored. she was able to join a dance club that met later in the evenings.

i would just tell the anxiously awaiting decisions NOT to be disappointed with a spring admit decision. Freshman Connection is an OPTION for the spring admit that is worthwhile and you become a TERP just like the regular admit!

I’ve heard great things about FC as well! It used to be until a few years ago you could not have on campus housing and basically could commute to take classes. But with so many decent community colleges in the area students weren’t paying the tuition to UMCP for a semester.

soooooo guys are we thinking more today or friday?

@dnaLigase14 I’m crossing my fingers for today, however it’s 50/50!

Based on what I’ve read and heard, today is unlikely – as just mentioned by someone on this thread, admissions office isn’t going to want to be inundated on Friday with calls and will likely allow for a ‘cooling off’ period over the weekend and release at 5pm on Friday. Allows for kids and parents to gather questions (e.g., FC, deferral, etc.) and then next week, admissions handles all of the calls. With that said, I’m speculating 100%! Hope for today, but guess is tomorrow.

I have several friends whose kids were accepted for spring admission and freshman connection, and all have been completely satisfied with the experience. It’s not any different from the process or experience for fall admits. Two of the FC kids lived on campus (they even requested and were able to room together, so it doesn’t sound like FC students are filled into the last remaining spots in the dorms), another commutes. So, our D18 will be happy whether she is a fall or spring admit - she just wants to get an acceptance notification :). I agree that it seems like an announcement tomorrow will save the admissions office lots of calls. One of my friends whose kid got in with FC requested an in-person meeting to learn exactly why her kid wasn’t accepted as a fall regular admit (they did meet with her), so I’m sure they get many calls from families. I’ve already let D18 know that decisions are final, and there isn’t a way to call the school and appeal anything so that she doesn’t get her hopes up. She’s got 2 other acceptances in hand, but UMCP is definitely her top choice so we’ve got our fingers crossed.
Good luck everyone - I hope everyone on here is accepted!

I wonder if there any stats for students admitted to FC? Be curious of the range.

from counselor today…your D is being considered in the early action pool, we call early action ‘priority.’ She’ll get her decision in this round. We still are working on finalizing everything and also have a new application system and well as review system, so we haven’t given out an exact date in case we need extra time to send all decisions out. It should be within the next couple of days however.

I’m thinking this could mean not everyone may get a decision the same day?

@TaraGmez umd doesn’t release stats on FC students therefore the stats UMD releases about their admitted class (like on their website or on other websites like prepscholar) only incorporated regularly admitted students
