UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

Posting on my D’s behalf. UMD is one of her two top choices. Planning to submit the application tomorrow. Instate. Applying for premed. UwGPA 3.93, wGPA 4.65, SAT 1540 (math 800, reading 740). SAT Math2 770, SAT Biology M 730. 5 in AP Biology, AP USH, AP Govt. 4 in AP word history and AP Lang. 3 in AP physics. Four more APs in the senior year. Hoping for some merit aid too.

She seems in very good shape for admission , as you probably already know. What is your question? Maybe post also in the UMD forum for general discussion about EA, merit, etc.

@sevmom , @SoofDad , thank you for your response. I found the appropriate thread.

Anyone knows when the EA decisions for the class of 2021 were sent?

@WilliamNYC - Last year’s decisions were released on January 27.

Yeah you’ll easily get into UMD it’s not too selective and you have really good stats so you should be set.

Those are some stellar credentials @bsms2018 … Your D did good! Congrats and good luck with the wait!

While I try to avoid “chance” discussions, I cannot let the comment, “UMD it’s not too selective” stand unanswered.

According to Maryland’s website, the freshman profile is as follows:
For the Fall 2017 freshmen class, we received nearly 33,000 applications for a class of 4,075. For students admitted for the Fall 2017 semester, the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1330 to 1440, and 30-33 on the ACT. Admitted freshmen also earned an average weighted GPA of 4.30.

Certainly, Maryland is not as highly selective as the ivy leagues (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc), but it is indeed considered to be more selective by US News & World Report, Princeton Review rates it 94/99 on a scale of 60-99 for selectivity, and The NYTimes gave it a rank of 3 (highly competitive)…

Hope this information helps.

@WilliamNYC , thank you so much

Thanks for the input and information! I’ve realized that UMD has been getting more selective and more reputable throughout the years.

Curious about UMD’s “Priority Application” possible outcomes in January. Could applicants also get deferred to a later round as is the case with other schools’ EA rounds?

@WilliamNYC, SoofDad did a great job addressing this question on this thread http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/2028016-the-umd-application-review-process.html

Thanks @maryversity! Very interesting post.

@aag2000 are you in state or out of state? Your stats are good- but UMD is super competitive…you have high level math with UMD likes in an applicant. What major are you applying for? Some of their LEPs (limited enrollment programs) are even harder to get into. Good luck!

Hi, @STF4717 , I am an Indian girl out of state applicant from NJ. I put that I intend to major for public health. Is that major competitive at UMD?

@aag2000 - Public Health is not a Limited Enrollment Program at UMD. If you are admitted to UMD, you will get into that Major.

When will the Early Action results be out? TIA.

@ceomommy21 - The UMD website states that decisions will be released “By February 1, 2018”. They oten come out a few days before that. Last year’s decisions were released on Friday, Jan 27.
