JMU like Fla State…straight fwd, gives notice and all at same time. Anxietyless
just thumbs up or down in the past
BC was great like that, they gave us a heads up on when it would be put out exactly, and the acceptance letter and other stuff was mostly all in that one email that went to everyone.
A1A1A1 wrote, “Haven’t been impressed how colleges in general use the technology. In this day in age, there shouldn’t be so much uncertainty and confusion as to where to check, etc.”
Maybe worthy of (or already exhausted in) another thread, I don’t know, or maybe a brief diversion from the admissions anxiety, but it is hard for me to see why UMD (and Pitt) use the Coalition App at all as their technology. Standing in the applicant and applicant’s family’s shoes, the Coalition App just meant reentering a bunch of the same info entered on the Common App, conforming the Common App essay to the Coalition App requirements (including most notably a different word limit) or vice versa, additional uncertainty in dealing with HS counselors’ unfamiliarity with the Coalition App, and generally just adapting to the pain in the behind that is two separate systems.
Maybe 'The Locker" feature of the Coalition App will ultimately prove an important and distinguishing feature that serves the Coalition App’s promise of offering an app portal that is more accessible to more kids (although lobbying from the colleges themselves would surely cause the Common App to introduce a comparable feature). Or maybe UMD and Pitt (and the few other Coalition schools) actually do want to make it less convenient to apply either as a gauge of true interest or otherwise. Or maybe, like Pitt, they want to basically maintain the attractiveness of applying through their own institutional portal by providing only the Coalition App as a less popular alternative to the Common App.
Anyway, there are undoubtedly institutional reasons that UMD and Pitt chose the Coalition App, and maybe the trend will move toward the Coalition App. But at this point in time, it seems to complicate the apps process, not make it easier or more accessible.
Just my two cents. The best of luck to each of you today.
Is it possible to be denied from business school but accepted to maryland? I’m sure avg stats for accepted people are much lower for other majors that are not business.
@JMS111 I have heard that the coalition is a legal thing. Due to some contract/legal agreement certain schools can’t use the common app. Therefore, those schools wanted to make it slightly less incovienient, and came together to make a similar platform to the common app which fits their legal guidelines: the coalition. Without it, Penn State, Maryland, and many other coalition schools still would not be on the common app, they would all be seperate applications
Does anyone know where the admission result will be when they get released? Is there a place to check or will it come via email?
do we know for sure that decisions are coming out today?? got deferred from UVA yesterday and the wait is killing me!!
no one is 100% sure it’s today…rumor is today. UMD will send email that decision has been posted to the coalition app…first time UMD doing this, so shall see.
18dcostello - Thanks, I had not heard that, and that would be a sensible explanation and, as you say, consolidate in one app at least those schools who would otherwise each have their own separate portal, so that’ a good thing.
I had only heard that the Coalition App was developed by some sort of consortium of some colleges as a Common App alternative designed to increase ease of access to the college process for kids, with “The Locker” being the chief innovation, allowing kids to essentially add essays, art, etc. throughout their HS careers for possible use in the college app process at the end. I think part of the notion was that The Locker would be especially helpful for kids without the support of strong HS guidance/counseling departments/staff. And that is absolutely an important and laudable goal. It’s just too bad, then, that something like The Locker can’t just be added to the Common App. But maybe there are contractual issues.
Perhaps there is a financial aspect too? Did schools come to think of The Common App as gaining monopoly power, and perhaps with that power The Common App charges some sort of fee to participating institutions that some schools felt is unreasonable, so they decided to come up with their own alternative? That is truly pure speculation.
Anyway, thanks for the helpful reply!
@SJAB12 I have only heard of the Terp bus for UMD. My D did get a call from Shenandoah 4 days after her audition and then an email a day after that, but it’s much smaller!!
@A1A1A1 My D sent everything into PSU in early October, but due to auditioning for the School of Music, she won’t hear anything until AFTER the audition in February. My S heard from them in less than 2 weeks when he applied. It depends upon the school you apply to.
@gopackgo101 I’m not sure about the School of Business, but it is possible to be accepted into the School of Music, but not the University. It’s also possible to be accepted into the University but not the School of Music. That was the information we were told last week at my D’s audition.
How do you withdraw your application?
I haven’t received the decision yet
My son applied to PSU first couple of weeks in September and still waiting…others applied at end of October and heard 3 weeks later - its 100% random at PSU as you say. Anyway, given this is UMD thread, let’s go terps!
@A1A1A1…my son is in the same exact boat. All apps in on 9/17. PSU, UMD, Miami, Florida. PSU is killing us! All these acceptances from people who applied so much later, but met the deadline. We check the portal about 10x a day. Hoping they’ll put up notification more than one time overnight. Business school.
What time will it come out today?
Nothing is posted on either the UMd Admissions Facebook or Twitter pages indicating decisions are coming out today. Hope that’s not an indication that they are going to release next week.
they won’t post on social media that it’s “going” to post…majority of these schools use the “by” date and then they just have everyone in a tizzy for a couple of weeks leading up to that date.
