I Know my GPA is insanely low for me to even be considered looking at but that was due to the self proclaimed issues that i was battling myself such as bullemia nervosa and depression most of my freshman through junior year. Not to mention that during my junior year during the month of may i got robbed outside of a local burger king and got my tooth chipped and my right arm fractured so that didint help my grades either. I made sure to cover through this in my application, although my gpa is really poor my grades currently (12th grade) are well (6:A, 1:B Semester grade), i am hoping this boosts my gpa enough to get it past the 3.0 mark for unweighted. My current classes are AP Calc BC, AP CHEM, AP Lit, and electives, throughout high school I have taken 8 AP and well over 15 honors classes. After this semester I plan to dual enroll in a community college during 2nd semester and get a college credit for BIO 101. Do I have any chance at all ? Also my parents and I are immigrants from Peru, and I am a future first generation college student.

@LHBCollege I’d say your chances look good for Freshman Connection. Your GPA may be low but your course rigor is excellent; hopefully your 1st quarter grades look good and show an upward trajectory. Being a first gen college student will help. Good luck!

LHBCollege are you going into a LEP(limited enrollment program?) My daughter had a 32ACT and a gpa of 3.65 and got into Freshman Connection. She loved it and is actually ahead of the game as far as courses are concerned due to the fact she was able to get in 3 of the prereqs needed to advance in her LEP. She is in her second year now and has a 3.94 gpa. She would do FC again in a heart beat.

@NusaDua If I get admitted into freshman connection(LEP) I would take it in a split second no questions asked. I know I could complete the LEP courses by the end of fall 2018 to hopefully be admitted into spring full time. I know my gpa doesn’t reflect who I am as a student and it really frustrates me because these were the cards I was dealt. UMD is my top choice being I’m in-state and getting financial assistance so the Tution isn’t too much.
@STF4717 Yeah the courses I’ve taken throughout highschool are challenging and hopefully that’s enough to give me the edge to get admitted into FC. Thank you very much as well.

last year was 1/26

What is the purpose for the school though to offer some students acceptance through Freshman Connection? It doesn’t appear to be the regular scheme of pure spring admission, nor is it like what NE does which is to send students with a spring start abroad for a semester. It seems like FC students stay on campus and take classes like any other student? What’s the point of the program?

@WilliamNYC this article is from a few years back, but hopefully gives u a sense of the purpose for freshman connection https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/u-mds-unusual-admissions-approach-one-out-of-every-five-freshmen-start-in-spring-term/2014/01/31/21d99a64-8794-11e3-916e-e01534b1e132_story.html?utm_term=.7ab2a704a7fe

The Freshman Connection program was started in 2006, and did not include on-campus housing. FC on-campus housing only started in the Fall of 2014. My D has a friend who started FC that year and lived in Denton Hall. Prior to Fall 2014, FC students had to live off campus or commute. UMD has been doing Spring Admissions since 1994.

Thanks @maryversity! Interesting read. It’s a bit like a spring admission but with a great effort to integrate students early on and give them a head start with off-peak classes. Nicely done. Currently when do FC students start with their classes? And on-campus housing is still not guaranteed for FC students?

As far as I know, on-campus housing is guaranteed for FC students, but I believe there is a limit on the size of the FC enrollment. The FC students start classes the same day as everyone else/

Freshman connection is only the first semester, and classes start the same day as all other students. The course offerings for freshman connection are just limited in scope compared to the hundreds available after that first semester, and none are offered in the morning/“prime time” slots. As I mentioned, this article is a few years old and they have since expanded housing and assigned some dorm space specifically to freshman connection. It is important to note that freshman connection is something u actually have to sign up for and is not “automatic” …some students choose to go abroad and some choose to take a “gap” semester and start in the spring. Students that are admitted for spring should sign up for freshman connection as soon as they decide to accept, both to insure their spot (space is somewhat limited I believe) and get their best choice of classes.

Hey University of Maryland is my top choice can you guys tell me what you think of my admission chances?

UW GPA-3.5 W GPA- 4.4
SAT-1430 (770 for math and 660 for critical reading)
I am out of state

EC: Robotics internship at local university, marching band, indoor drumline, NHS, local honor jazz bands, professionally recorded cd on amazon, itunes, and spotify, cross country team, and academic olympics team

I am applying for a computer science major. Please tell me what you all think!

@squbbs No one’s opinion matters other than the decision office. Just try and stay calm and wait it out

is it coming out this week?

@sss111222 No. Decisions come out during the last few days of January.

My friend who works at UMD CP told me that the decisions will be out on Jan 25th

@bsms2018 that seems about right considering last year’s date

Recalculated GPA based off UMDCP grading scale.
1340 SAT (680 math and 660 reading)
3.9 UW 4.1 W GPA
Chances EA out of state?

I do hope I get in, now that I’ve been rejected from my early school, this is my second (now top!) choice.
The anticipation is killing me!

If anyone wants to chance my stats:
In State
3.55/4.33, 1540 SAT
5 on BC Calc, Eng Lit, Comp Sci A, Music Theory, Govt, USH, 4 on Chem
Some extracurriculars including a NIST Internship, an internship at Cornerstone Montgomery, piano awards.

I don’t think I’m really a candidate for honors college though. Our school is mighty competitive, and I heard 28 seniors from our school last year recieved Banneker Scholarship (1/5 of all of maryland???)
