In reading stats and outcomes it sure seems to me Maryland’s applicant pool is getting much stronger. My son was offered a full Banneker Key in 2015 and I also know many of his friends’ stats and results as well as my daughters’ friends from this year. There are posted stats similar to my son’s who did not even get Honors and two of my daughters’ friends were admitted Freshman Connection with significantly better stats than my sons’ friends who were regular admits. Some of these outcomes from this year are really surprising to me. Maryland must be doing something right to get such strong candidates.
ahhhhhh hurry up
ahhhhhh hurry up
Not sure that they are necessarily doing something right. It seems that the application pool for competitive schools has swelled over recent years so many high stat kids looking for safety schools are looking to UMD, a solid school. At the end of the day it comes down to the number of high stat kids that actually attend. Without significant money, most of these kids are going elsewhere, especially the ones from OOS. If a student is looking at UMD v Michigan or UVA for the same price…its a no brainer.
Anyone with personal knowledge of trh FIRE program? My son was accepted to it for aerospace engineering OOS and I’d like to understand more what that would mean. I’ve read the links.
@TerpDad888 I agree that the stats have definitely increased! My son started there in 2015 and at that time, the Engineering dept touted the 4.0 GPA that students had, but he did NOT state if that was UW or W. My son had the UW 4.0, but he learned of others who did not. I do know that the rumor going around campus, even mentioned by professors, is that UMD wants to be the UC Berkeley of the East. Thus, they may be accepting more students with higher stats to achieve that goal. Also, any school that has a winning collegiate team (UMD has strong basketball and lacrosse teams) typically sees an upsurge in applications. Schools who have strong football programs for a few years see this and then once the team falls off, so do the number of applications. Let us not forget that for those of us in Maryland, you get a lot of bang for the buck. It’s a highly regarded university with little to no debt for many students. That was the clincher for us.
@STF4717 It would appear that there is an error. It’s possible it was on the original application. I would check to see if that was checked off incorrectly. Regardless, I would contact the University immediately as they admit a certain number of OOS vs IS and you want to be sure they have you in the right category. You may need to send proof of residency, which isn’t a big deal.

Wonder why I did not get admitted to fall…
Got in Friday to letters of arts and science and the carillon learning communities. Anyone know what those are/ the benefits of being in it?
Letters and sciences is an advising college. They are trained to help students that did not get into the LEP of their choice take appropriate courses to reapply to that major. They also assist students that are undecided majors.
Carillon learning communities, as with all other living learning programs, are a way to make a large university feel smaller by putting people with similar interests in a core group for activities and a few seminars.
Ah okay thanks. So I can still get into that specific major I’m interested in?
How are kids ending up in these living/learning communities? My child just got accepted and place in Carillon – we had never heard of it, my child isn’t particularly interested in any of its “interest areas”, and we are wondering what this is all about? I am not impressed. Am I missing something?
@maryuniversity Do you know if my son can still participate in Sports clubs/intramurals if he is in Scholars? I’m wondering if there will be time? I have read everything on the website but its not clear about the time constraints. Will he have the ability to socialize outside the program?
Where’s the scholars preferencing form? I can’t find it
@momofboys2 Yes, your son can do sports while in scholars. There is plenty of time for socialization as well. Most kids have the opposite problem with time management because, unlike high school, they can potentially have big breaks in between classes.
@Momofseveral10 the admissions selects students for invitation based on application info, essays, etc. It can’t hurt to start out as a participant. If he doesn’t like it, he can drop it. However, he won’t know until he tries it…
@Rgordeb2 Yes, you can still get into the major of your choice by reapplying as an “internal transfer” after you matriculate.
@bigfarts27 The link can be found on this page (note deadline in 3 weeks) https://www.scholars.umd.edu/about/admissions
Admit fall 2018 (Literally so surprised expected fc at most)
Major : Undecided
Classes : 8 Ap’s scored // 3 and above on 5 of them
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Weighted gpa : 3.3
Unweighted Gpa: 2.7
Sat: 1270
Act:33
Great Ec’s
Moving essay (brought ap lit teacher to tears)
Over 1k hours in community service from volunteering at summer camps over summer and helping organizing events for esophageal cancer
- explained very well why gpa is so low due to eating disorder and depression issues throughout highschool and having to help single mother clean for work instead of studying, etc like a regular kid.
Also to everyone that got denied I recommend for them to take classes at a community college over summer to get at least the 12 required credits ( 4 credits usually per big class// calc 101, bio 101 etc.) and reapply for spring 2019 as a transfer student before August. Also credits from previous ap courses in college taken (3 or more on ap test) can transfer over to the community college and then UMD. Not only will it show determination that you really want to go to UMD but it will show that you won’t let a rejection stop you and hopefully give you a better chance of getting admitted then.
UMD22
@maryversity: “he”? In any case, I did review my child’s essays, and I just can’t imagine why anyone thought this would be a good fit. It looks like a good fit for a sociology major.
I am also wondering, based on the stats here, what is going on with the honors college admissions? My child’s stats are higher than many who’ve posted here but got neither scholar nor honors. UMD is sort of taking themselves from a top choice to a non-starter. Very disappointed – sorry to seem ungrateful.
